As soon as the words left my mouth, a wave of embarrassment washed over me.
Had I been too blunt? Surely, Ashton must have felt awkward as well.
But instead of pulling away or reacting with discomfort, he paused for nearly half a minute before simply responding with, “Oh.”
I blinked in surprise.
Oh? How could he be so calm about it?
I glanced up at him, and only then did he slowly straighten his posture.
“Your eyesight isn’t great,” he explained patiently. “I pointed it out to you, but you still couldn’t find it. How else could I help without getting closer?”
His reasoning made perfect sense, leaving me feeling like I had been the one overthinking the
situation.
Ashton, completely unfazed, walked over to a chair, sat down, and picked up his tablet to continue working.
I stole a few glances at him, then sipped my tea to calm my nerves so I could refocus on the task at hand.
The document he had asked me to review contained a few minor issues, but nothing significant. They were things he could have easily handled himself.
Honestly, if he needed clarification, a quick phone call would have sufficed. Yet, he made me come all the way here late at night to go over these trivial matters.
Was he doing this on purpose? I couldn’t help but sneak another glance at him.
But Ashton appeared completely engrossed in his work. He didn’t once meet my gaze, making me feel like I was overthinking things again.
Once I addressed the issues in the document, I glanced over at him again–only to find that he had fallen asleep, his tablet resting in his arms.
I had always thought Ashton was tireless, immune to exhaustion, but clearly, I was wrong. He was human, after all. Even gods need rest, as I’d seen celestial beings in TV shows dozing off.
I found myself watching him quietly.
With his eyes closed, his tanned skin and strong features exuded an undeniable masculine charm. His high nose bridge, illuminated by the soft overhead light, gave him the appearance of a main character straight out of a drama series.
Thinking back to how Maya had complained about how exhausting her day had been, Ashton must have been even more worn out.
Over the past few days, I had seen him delegate tasks to others, but he was constantly on the move, managing countless details and making adjustments, even down to the lights. His work demanded both physical effort and mental focus.
It was no wonder he had fallen asleep like this.

As I observed him, a gust of wind lifted the curtains, sending a chill through the room. Seeing Ashton in short sleeves, I quietly got up, grabbed a blanket from the bed, and draped it over him.
I must have made a noise, or perhaps he was just a light sleeper, because the moment the blanket touched him, his eyes snapped open.
Before I could react, his hand shot out and clasped mine so tightly that it felt like my bones might break.
“Ow,” I gasped softly
His grip loosened slightly, but he didn’t let go. His dark eyes locked onto mine, intense and unwavering.
Up close, I saw my own startled reflection in his gaze, the depth of his pupils drawing me in.
He said nothing, and I found myself at a loss for words. My lips trembled as I tried to speak, but no
sound came out.
