At this point, Tessa couldn’t say anything more, even if she had other thoughts. 

She nodded. “Elaine, in my heart, you’re as good as my own daughter.” 

But if that were true, she wouldn’t have brought up Miles. Then again, it might have been his suggestion, considering he’d already confessed his feelings. 

“Sure. Let’s wait until Miles and Logan are free, and we’ll hold a little ceremony. I’ll officially acknowledge you and Ethan as my godparents.” 

I saw a flicker in Tessa’s eyes. She wasn’t entirely comfortable with the idea, but after all her kindness over the years, I didn’t doubt her intentions. 

“Alright,” she agreed reluctantly. 

After dropping her off, I ran into Logan. He wore a baseball cap and jersey instead of his usual business suit. For a moment, it reminded me of the boy I used to admire. 

Back in high school, Logan was all rebellion and thrill–seeking, sneaking off on motorcycles. I remembered clinging to him in fear during a ride, and afterward, he teased me, “Were you trying to claim me by holding on so tight?” 

But those days were long gone. Seeing him like this again stirred something, but I knew better. The cap wasn’t about carefree rebellion–it was to hide his injury. 

“What’s this? Back for more since yesterday wasn’t exciting enough?” Logan grinned cheekily. 

Before I could respond, Tessa swatted at him. “How dare you say that? If Elaine hadn’t held back, you’d be in the hospital right now.”

“Mrs. Mercer, do you even care about me? Am I your child, or is she?” Logan quipped, dodging hand. 

“I wish Elaine were mine. Who told you to come out of me?” Tessa shot back, her humor sharp as ever. 

“Fine. Let her be your daughter next life, and I’ll stay far away,” Logan joked, pulling her close to avoid 

another swat. 

Watching their banter, I felt a pang of envy. If my parents were still around, maybe I’d still have moments like this. But life doesn’t offer “what ifs.” 

“Tessa, I should go now,” I said softly. 

“Wait,” Logan called. “I need to talk to you.” 

“There’s nothing left to say,” I replied, unwilling to argue. 

“I think there is,” Logan insisted.
