Chapter 109

What are you doing here?Monica’s voice rang out sharply, echoing off the cold, sterile walls. Her hands tightened around the blanket covering her. Mom? What is this woman doing here? Why did you let her in? I thoughtI told you not to allow her inside!”

Amalia hesitated, her eyes darting between her daughter and Izzy. She’s-”

Save the drama,Izzy interrupted coolly, brushing past her. She placed the bouquet of white lilies on the small table beside Monica’s bed and straightened it with calm precision. The sight of the flowersthe same type often seen at funeralsdid not go unnoticed by Monica. Izzy turned to face her, raising a brow. Did you honestly think I came here for you?A bitter snort escaped her lips. No. I came for your dead child. At the end of the day, the child is innocent.”

YouHow dare you!Monica’s voice trembled with fury as she sat up straighter. Her face twisted in rage, her hands clenching the bedsheets. Mom, take her out of this place! Now!”

Amalia winced at the outburst and approached cautiously. Monicacan we at least calm down?she urged softly, glancing between the two women. Izzy must be here to apologize-”

Apologize?Monica’s eyes widened with incredulity as she glared at her mother. She killed your grandchild, Mom! She—”

Can we just hear her out?Amalia interrupted, desperation creeping into her voice. She placed a hand on Monica’s arm, trying to calm her. She flashed Izzy a hopeful, expectant look as if waiting for her to soften

Izzy, however, ignored the two as she sat down with a cold, unflinching stare. It didn’t take too long for Amalia to move toward her eagerly. The woman wore a polite smile, already envisioning a hefty compensation to fix things. She folded her hands and said, Izzy, you’re here, and that’s good. Maybe if you apologize properly, Monica might forgive you. I raised a good daughter, you knowvery forgiving.”

Izzy raised an eyebrow, leaned forward slightly, and said with a dry smirk, Forgiving? Like when she forgave me for stealing my boyfriend by sleeping with him behind my back? That was really sweet of her.”

Amalia’s expression soured instantly, her pleasant facade crumbling. What’s that supposed to mean?she asked sharply. Didn’t you come here to apologize after what you did to Monica’s baby?”

Izzy leaned back, crossing her legs. She met Monica’s glare with icy calm. You and I both know the truth, Monica, she said, locking eyes with her. So why are we playing this little act? It’s just us here.”

Monica’s face twisted in anger. Clearly unsettled, Amalia stepped between them. What truth are you talking about?she asked

Izzy gave a humorless chuckle, her gaze not wavering. Ask your perfect daughter. She glanced back at Monica. Oh, wait- you already know everything, don’t you?”

Amalia fumbled for words while Monica’s face turned red with rage. The tension thickened as Izzy casually picked at the sleeve of her coat. She wasn’t here to offer peace. She was here to make sure the truth was simmering right under the surface, ready to explode

Amalia’s face twitched at Izzy’s words, but she quickly masked her irritation with a forced smile. She couldn’t afford to lose control, not now. Inside, her mind was already full of the things that she’s going to do. If Izzy apologized, surely that could lead to some form of compensation. Perhaps a large enough amount to clear those debts she and her man had accumulated. Creditors had been breathing down her neck for months. The mortgage, the unpaid loansit was a mountain of problems threatening to bury her alive

This girl has money. So much money, Amalia thought. If I can just get her to feel guilty enough…

Izzy,” Amalia began again, softening her voice. I know things have been tense. You were under stress, and accidents happen. We understand. What matters is the family coming together. Let’s not make things worse. If you apologize, we can move forward.”

Izzy gave her a long, steady look. Ah, yes, familyFunny word, isn’t it? Only seems to come up when someone wants something.”

Amalia flinched at the sharpness in Izzy’s words but forced a chuckle. Don’t be like that. We all just want peace. I raised Monica to value family-”

The daughter you raised climbed into my boyfriend’s bed, Amalia.Izzy cut her off, her voice as cold as ice. Let’s not pretend we’re living in some fairytale where everyone’s innocent.”

Amalia’s polite expression cracked, her thoughts turning bitter. Insolent girl! Does she think bringing up the past will help her now? Yet, she forced herself to smile. She still had to play the long game. Maybe Izzy would lose her composure, and offer money to make it all go away. The debts. The creditors. Everything could have been solved if Izzy had just given in

Then if you didn’t come here to apologize, what did you come here for?Monica said after a few minutes of silence. Just like her mother, she had been thinking about the compensation that Izzy would offer to ease her pain. Money isn’t really a problem when it comes to Izzy. A few million should be fine, right

I am here to see you, of course,” Izzy said. To see if you felt something after deliberately killing your own child. I mean…. that is a heartless thing to do, isn’t it? Last nightI wasn’t able to sleep thinking what would you look like after doing what you did. Would I see remorse? A little bit of fear, maybe?”

You-Monica’s face reddened
