“Here are the things that you asked me for last time,” Lawyer Alcaraz smiled as she handed Izzy a tablet with a USB drive on top of it. 

Izzy took the USB from the table and slipped it into her bag. Then, she picked up the tablet and started scrolling through its contents. Her eyes narrowed slightly as she read. Something caught her attention. 

“Are you sure about this, Atty. Alcaraz?” she asked, looking up from the screen. “Monica’s father… he’s alive?” 

Maria Alcaraz nodded. “Yes. The records confirm it. The man who fathered Monica is still living but is drowning in debt. Apparently, Amalia has been using her money to keep him afloat” 

Izzy recalled Amalia’s words over the years–telling her mother, and even Izzy herself, that her husband had passed away long ago. Was that a lie all this time? 

“The transactions, Maria continued. “Include regular bank transfers, large sums of money being funneled to cover his debts, and even credit cards under Amalia’s name issued to him. He cannot get his own credit card after wrecking his credit score. And it’s been going on for years. In fact, half of the household budget you provide has been diverted to sustain his lifestyle and his gambling.” 

Atty. Alcaraz continued, “You can see the records. He and Amalia have been gambling for years. Your grandfather was informed of this in the past, but he feared that if we reported it to you, you might not believe it and would start to resent his interference.” 

Izzy clenched her jaw. Her eyes glossed over the reports that showed how much had been spent on gambling and paying debts instead of proper household maintenance. “So she’s been lying to me for years, bleeding my accounts to support this… parasite?” At this point, she no longer had the energy to be angry Still, she couldn’t help but blame herself for being such a fool. 

Maria gave a solemn nod. “It seems that way. And there’s more. Monica is aware of the situation. We found correspondence between her and Amalia discussing how to keep you from finding out and even her giving money to her father.” 

Izzy leaned back in her chair, exhaling slowly. “Of course, she knew,” she murmured to herself. “So Amalia is in debt?” 

“Yes, to loan sharks. However, it seems that she used this money to obtain the title that she stole from you.” 

“Who would give her that amount of money?” Izzy frowned. These properties are worth hundreds of thousands. 

“Izzy, you might not know this, but there are many people willing to lend someone money. This is why the black market exists.” 

Izzy pursed her lips. The thirty days she’d given them were almost up. However, she had promised Amalia that they could stay for the next six months if she returned the titles. She rolled her eyes inwardly. It seemed she had undecimated that 

woman. 

“However, I didn’t just ask you to come because of this,” Atty. Alcaraz said before she took a sip of her coffee. “You’re now of age, Izzy,” Maria continued, pushing a new folder across the table. “With that, your grandfather’s shares, along with control of several assets, are now officially under your name. This includes a network of shell companies abroad.” 

Izzy frowned and leaned forward, flipping through the documents in front of her. “Shell companies?” she asked, skimming over the corporate names and ownership structures. “Why would he need so many?” 

Maria tapped one of the documents. “Your grandfather was a very meticulous man. He set these up to minimize taxes and

Izzy absorbed the information as she flipped through the pages. Each document outlined vast amounts of money and properties spread across different countries. Then her eyes landed on the summary report at the back of the folder. Her jaw tightened as she read the numbers. 

“Over a hundred million in liquid assets?” she muttered in disbelief. “And three hundred million in fixed and even more non–liquid investments? Combined, his total portfolio valuation reaches six hundred million dollars?” Isn’t this a bit too much? 

Maria nodded. 

Izzy placed the folder on the table and crossed her arms. “That can’t be right. My grandfather wasn’t that rich. At most, he might’ve been worth a hundred or two hundred million. This doesn’t add up.” 

Maria chuckled softly, shaking her head as she leaned back in her chair. “You’ve always been a bit naive about this, Izzy. Your grandfather built his company from the ground up. He wasn’t flashy, so it’s no surprise you underestimated him. But just because he wasn’t flaunting yachts and mansions doesn’t mean he wasn’t a multimillionaire.” 

Izzy’s brows knitted together as she considered this. “But I lived with him. We never had a luxurious lifestyle. He was strict about money.” 

“Exactly,” Maria replied, pointing a pen at her. “That’s how he built and maintained his wealth. He reinvested profits, kept expenses low, and diversified his assets globally. He might not have been in the same league as billionaires, but he knew how to grow and protect what he had.”
