Chapter 150
Calen’s expression changed. “What?”
Izzy tilted her head slightly. “What will you do if I refuse?”
Calen blinked, clearly caught off guard.
Izzy took a step closer, arms crossed. “Are you going to fire me?”
Calen’s mouth opened, then closed. He looked momentarily lost for words.
Inwardly, he was reeling.
He hadn’t expected her to ask that.
For years, Izzy had always done what was required of her. When he handed her projects, she handled them. When he pushed deadlines, she met them. When he demanded late hours, she stayed. Even when he assigned tasks outside her scope, she completed them.
Macau was no different. If anything, this was the biggest project she had ever taken on, which was why he had assumed she would act the same way she always had–doing everything he asked, ensuring things ran smoothly, and working past exhaustion if necessary.
But now…
Izzy didn’t wait for a response. “If you have an issue with this, you can take it up with HR.”
Calen’s jaw tensed, but he still said nothing.
Izzy turned to Anna. “Prepare my things. We’re leaving.”
Anna nodded immediately, not questioning her. She moved efficiently, gathering Izzy’s belongings while Izzy remained completely composed.
Calen finally snapped out of his silence. “When are you going to finish this, then?”
Izzy picked up the USB she had just handed him and tapped it lightly against the stack of documents. “I already did everything necessary for a smooth transition. The rest…” She placed the USB back down. “That’s for the new project leader to handle.”
Calen narrowed his eyes. “You’re doing this on purpose.”
Izzy raised an eyebrow. “Doing what?”
“Spiting me.” Calen’s tone was sharp.
Izzy’s lips curled into a small, unreadable smile. “I’m only doing my job based on the contract I signed.”
Calen’s hands clenched into fists.
Izzy took a step toward the door, then paused just before leaving. She turned slightly, just enough to glance at him over her shoulder. “Don’t worry,” she said smoothly. “You’ll have all the time in the world to show off your skills.”
Calen’s brows furrowed. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
Izzy didn’t answer.

She walked toward the exit, her posture relaxed, her pace unhurried.
Calen’s frustration grew. “Izzy,” he called again. “What do you mean by that?”
Izzy kept walking, not sparing him another glance.
The door closed behind her.

The dim lighting of the exclusive club cast a golden glow over the polished wooden floors and plush leather seating. Soft jazz played in the background, blending with the quiet hum of conversations and the occasional clink of glasses. Izzy stepped inside, barely glancing at the well–dressed patrons as she scanned the room.
Her eyes landed on a private booth tucked away in the corner. Maria Alcaraz sat there, one arm draped over the back of the seat, casually swirling a glass of wine in her hand.
Izzy wasted no time. She strode toward the booth and slid into the seat across from her.
Maria lifted an eyebrow but didn’t seem surprised.
“Thanks for meeting me,” Izzy said as she placed her clutch on the table. “I know it’s late.”
Maria smirked slightly, setting her glass down. “You say that like I wasn’t already here.” She leaned back, tilting her head. “I’ve been buried in work all week. I needed a night to blow off some steam.”
A waiter approached before Izzy could respond. She barely glanced at the menu. “Whiskey. Neat.”
The waiter nodded. “Any preference?”
“The strongest you have.”
Maria let out a quiet chuckle, then turned to the waiter. “I’ll have a gin and tonic.”
The waiter nodded again before walking off.
Maria folded her hands together on the table. “That bad?”
Izzy exhaled sharply. “Calen is going to lead the Macau project now.”
Maria’s fingers stilled. “Excuse me?”
Izzy leaned back against the booth, crossing her legs. “Renard wants to use this as a way to repair Weiss Inc.’s image. He thinks putting Calen at the forefront will reassure investors and shift the public’s focus away from the scandal.”
Maria scoffed. “And they dared do that?”
Izzy shrugged. “It’s their company.”
Maria tapped her nails against the table. “After all the work you put
in?”
Izzy didn’t answer immediately. Instead, she leaned back, stretching her arms slightly.
The timing was perfect–just as Maria was about to say something else, the waiter returned with their drinks.
A glass of deep amber whiskey was placed in front of Izzy, the rich scent of oak and spice filling the air. Maria’s gin and tonic followed, condensation forming on the rim.
Izzy picked up her glass, rolling the liquid slightly before taking a sip. The burn was immediate, sharp, and exactly what she

needed.
Maria watched her for a moment before picking up her own drink. “Alright,” she said, tapping the edge of her glass against Izzy’s. “Tell me everything.”
Izzy wasted no time and told Maria everything that transpired, especially about Cecil. However, she didn’t include the fact that Liam was responsible for everything.
“So, they decided to make Calen lead the project because of the Johnson family?” Maria asked, frowning.
“That’s the only reason I can think of.” At the end of the day, Izzy was of no use to them now that she refused to marry Calen.
Izzy swirled the whiskey in her glass, watching the amber liquid catch the dim light before taking another sip. The burn did nothing to dull the thoughts running through her mind.
Renard Weiss was a calculated man. He wouldn’t make a decision like this without expecting something in return.
Putting Calen at the front of a major project wasn’t just about appeasing investors. It was about influence.
The Johnson family had stayed silent since the scandal broke, but their name was still tied to Weiss Inc. through Pamella. If Renard wanted them to intervene–to use their power to stabilize the situation–there was no better way than placing Calen in a leadership role. A visible one.
It wasn’t about competence. It was about pressure.
A deep sense of betrayal settled in Izzy’s chest.
