Chapter 165
Calen’s grip on the papers tightened, his knuckles turning white. He skimmed the list again, his eyes narrowing at the sheer number of names.
“What the hell is this?” he snapped, tossing the papers onto his desk. He turned to his secretary, who stood stiffly across from him. “Why the hell is there a mass resignation in my department?”
The secretary hesitated. “Sir, it-”
“Why was this approved?” Calen cut him off, his frustration mounting.
The secretary swallowed hard. “We couldn’t find a reason to disapprove the contracts. And the HR said-”
Calen’s glare darkened. “Shut up.” He didn’t wait for a response. Pushing his chair back with a sharp scrape, he stood and strode out of his office.
The entire floor was silent as he walked past, employees pretending to focus on their work, avoiding his gaze. He didn’t care. His steps didn’t slow until he reached the HR department. Without knocking, he pushed the door open, startling the HR manager, who looked up from her desk.
“What is going on?” Calen demanded, slamming the papers onto the desk in front of her. “You approved all these resignations?”
The HR manager blinked but kept her composure. “They followed the proper procedure,” she said. “We’re not breaking any laws.”
Calen’s jaw clenched. “Did you even ask them why they were leaving?”
The HR manager hesitated.
Calen’s patience snapped. “These people have been here for years. They’re important to the company. You didn’t think it was worth looking into why they all suddenly decided to leave?”
She exhaled, her fingers tightening around her pen. “They only gave one reason.”
Calen’s eyes bore into her. “And?”
“Their goals no longer align with the goals of the company.”
Calen’s fists clenched. That was it? That was the only explanation? His mind churned, trying to piece together what the hell was going on.
“And you just accepted that?” he asked sharply.
The HR manager shifted uncomfortably but nodded. “Sir, this isn’t the only resignation. We’ve had similar cases in finance and other departments.”
Calen’s head snapped up. “Other departments?”
She nodded again. “However, we’ve already posted those positions and are in the process of hiring new employees.”
Calen let out a sharp breath, his fingers pressing against the desk. “We can’t bring in new people in the middle of a project and expect them to keep up,” he snapped. “They’ll mess everything up!”
The HR manager didn’t respond immediately. She knew better than to argue when he was like this.
“I need you to do something about this! Offer some sort of a bonus, a salary increase! I need to keep these people in the

company! Do you understand me?”
“But sir that is not…”
“Just do what I say!” Calen didn’t wait for an answer. He pushed himself away from the desk and stormed out of the office, his anger barely contained. Something was going on, and he had some suspicion about who was responsible for this.
Calen stormed through the hallways. Employees barely had time to step out of his way as he made a direct path to Izzy’s office. He didn’t bother knocking. He pushed the door open with force, his presence demanding attention.
Izzy glanced up from her desk, seemingly unfazed. She leaned back slightly, setting her pen down as she watched him. “To what do I owe the pleasure?”
Calen stepped forward, slamming the resignation documents onto her desk. “Why are you doing this?” he demanded. “Are you really going to destroy the whole project?”
Izzy arched a brow. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
Calen’s jaw tightened. “Don’t play dumb, Izzy. Thanks to you, people are leaving Weiss Inc.”
Izzy tilted her head. “And that’s my fault? How?”
Calen scoffed. “You instigated this.”
Izzy picked up the papers, flipping through them lazily before setting them back down. “That’s a serious accusation,” she said, clasping her hands together. “You should be careful with your words. I could sue you for defamation.”
Calen’s fists clenched. He wanted to explode. Every muscle in his body was tight with frustration, but he forced himself to breathe. He closed his eyes for a brief second, inhaling deeply before exhaling just as slowly.
He was alone.
His mother was still unconscious. His father was indifferent, blaming him for everything. And now, the one project that could redeem him was falling apart.
He opened his eyes. His voice was steady this time. “Why aren’t you leaving me a way out?”
Izzy leaned back in her chair, watching him carefully. “I’m not doing anything at all,” she said. “You need to calm down. This is your mess, not mine.”
Calen felt a sinking weight in his chest. His hands curled into fists before he forced them to relax. He let out a slow breath, staring at her.
“Is there really no chance for you to continue working for the company?” he asked, his voice measured. “Even just for this project? Or convincing the others to stay?”
Izzy smiled faintly. “I already told you. I’m leaving.” She tapped the stack of papers lightly. “And as for them? Convincing them to stay isn’t my job.” Her eyes met his. “It’s yours, Vice President Weiss.”
Calen stared at her, feeling the weight of those words settle heavily on his shoulders.
Defeated, Calen walked out of Izzy’s office without saying another word.
Once Izzy was alone, she quickly called Anna inside. Izzy leaned forward, resting her elbows on the desk. “What is going
on?”
Anna exhaled, pulling out her tablet. “It wasn’t just one or two people,” she said. “The team chose to resign at the same time.”
