Izzy gritted her teeth. She had known Olivier Horvath was a bastard, but not like this. Not to this level. 

“I’ve never met a father like you.” she said. “How can you even call yourself Liam’s father? All you’ve ever done is tear him down. Mock him. Humiliate him. That’s not parenting. That’s abuse.” 

Olivier didn’t flinch. He simply chuckled, low and slow, like he was genuinely amused. 

You really are blind,” he said. “No–stupid. If you think Liam built what he has because he’s clean, then you’re out of your mind. Your husband–your precious Liam–built everything with blood. With backdoor deals. With plays, I taught him. He’s not some saint you dragged out of the mud. He’s just like me.” 

Izzy’s fists clenched at her sides 

“The only difference between us,” Olivier continued, stepping closer, “is that he lets a woman like you walk into rooms like this and act like you belong. That’s where he failed.” 

Izzy’s eyes flashed. “Shut your mouth.” 

Olivier’s grin widened. “Hit a nerve?” 

“I said shut your mouth! Liam is nothing like you. Stop trying to drag your son’s name with you! I know Liam.” 

“Do you?” Olivier tilted his head. “Then where do you think he learned how to manipulate? How to set up deals? You really think all that came from your bedtime stories and charity work?” He scoffed. “That boy learned from the best. He watched me, studied me. And now you’re so high on your little fantasy that you don’t see the truth.” 

Izzy took a sharp step forward. “Liam has more integrity in one finger than you’ve had in your entire life.” 

“Is that what he told you?” Olivier sneered. “You want to talk about what kind of man Liam is?” he said. 

Izzy gritted her teeth. A part of her wanted to slap this man, but no. She was not here for that. 

“You don’t have the right to talk about your son after what you did to him,” Izzy said. She needed to convince herself to stay on the script. She cannot let her anger get the best of her. 

Olivier crossed his arms, shaking his head like he was disappointed. “And here I thought you had at least a bit of sense. Turns out you’re just another fool who fell for a pretty story.” 

Izzy narrowed her eyes but didn’t speak. 

“Liam built his company on the blood of others. He didn’t climb the ladder–he broke it and stepped on everyone who tried to follow. You believe him because he’s charming. Because he looks at you like you’re special. That’s the worst mistake you 

could’ve made.” 

“He’s not like that,” Izzy said. 

Olivier scoffed. “What did you think he was? A knight in shining armor? Is it because he married you after you were tossed aside by Calen Weiss?” 

Izzy stiffened. “What?” 

Olivier’s lips curled. “You heard me. You really didn’t know? Do you?” 

Izzy didn’t answer. Her throat tightened. It’s coming, she thought. 

Olivier stepped closer. “He set it up. All of it. He knew you were coming back that night. He made sure Calen was there.

Izzy froze. 

“Liam made sure those loan sharks found her. Pushed her just far enough to pawn everything the owned. Comversent, wasn’t it? Everything around you is crumbling. No one to turn to. No one but him.” 

“No,” Izzy muttered, shaking her head. “That’s not true,” 

“It is.” Olivier’s voice was calm, too calm. “You think you ended up in his arms by accident? Do you think he just happened to be there every time you needed saving? No. He controlled it all. He built your collapse. And then he wasted” 

Izzy’s legs felt heavy. Her hands hung stiff at her sides. “No. Liam wouldn’t- he wouldn’t do that to me 

“Oh but he did,” Olivier said. “Because he’s my son. And whether you like it or not, he learned from the best” 

Izzy backed up until she hit the door. Her chest was tight but it wasn’t from what Olivier said. It was the fact that these were the words that Olivier used against Liam the other night. This was the reason why Liam got drunk! What kind of father would do something like this to his own son? 

“He isn’t like you,” she said, quieter now. “He… he’s not.” 

Olivier watched her with something close to pity. “Keep telling yourself that, Isabella. Just don’t act surprised when you find 

out the truth.” 

Olivier gave a slow shake of his head and laughed again, not bothering to hide the amusement on his face. 

“You really thought you were the center of the story, didn’t you?” he said. “Thought you were the main character, pulling the strings. But you’ve been a puppet from the start. Every move you made, every decision–you thought they were yours. But Liam was always the one holding the strings.” 

Izzy stared at him, stunned into silence for a second. “Liar!” Then she stepped forward again. “You’re a liar!” 

Olivier shrugged. “Maybe. But I don’t need to lie to ruin your little fairy tale. Liam made you feel powerful. Made you feel like you had a say. But all he did was let you move just enough to keep you from noticing the walls closing in” 

“That’s not true,” Izzy snapped. “You’re saying all of this because you can’t stand the fact that he doesn’t need you. You’ve been an absent father his whole life. You don’t know anything about him. So don’t stand there pretending you know what he’s done or why he did it.” 

Olivier’s smile faded. His jaw tensed. 

“You’re threatened by him,” she continued. “You always have been. That’s why you keep coming after him–because he became more than you ever could. He built everything without you. And now you’re trying to tear him down through me?” 

Olivier said nothing. 

“You thought I’d just fall apart?” she asked. “You thought I’d believe every disgusting word you said and turn against him? Do I look that stupid to you?” 

Olivier stepped closer again, this time with less of the smirk and more of the steel. “You should be asking yourself why I know all of this, Isabella. Maybe I was absent–but I wasn’t blind.” 

Izzy didn’t step back. “And maybe you should be asking yourself why your son would rather burn every bridge than stand next to you.”
