Izzy floated in a strange quiet and heavy space. There was no light, no sound. It felt like being underwater, except there was no pressure on her chest. Just stillness. She wasn’t sure how long she had been like this. Minutes? Hours? Days?
She remembered the car crash. The sharp sound of impact. The way her body slammed against the door. Then everything turned black.
Now, she wasn’t sure if she was awake or dreaming.
A dull ache pulled at her from somewhere far away. Then the darkness began to shift. Her fingers twitched. Her chest rose slowly, the act unfamiliar. Something beeped in the distance. A soft beeping. Regular. Mechanical.
Light filtered through her eyelids. Not bright, but enough to make her wince slightly when she opened them.
A white ceiling. Pale walls. The sterile smell of a hospital. Machines stood nearby, silent except for one that let out a steady beat. Her body felt heavy. She couldn’t move much.
Then she saw him.
Liam was sitting beside her, head resting on the edge of her bed. His hand was on top of hers. His jacket was off. The sleeves of his dress shirt were rolled up. His head tilted slightly like he had fallen asleep in that position.
Izzy stared at him.
As if sensing her gaze, Liam stirred. He sat up and blinked. His eyes found hers, and he stood quickly.
“Izzy,” he said.
She tried to speak, but her throat was dry. Nothing came out. Her lips moved slightly, but the pain in her throat stopped her.
Liam reached for the pitcher on the side table. He poured some water into a plastic cup, then picked up a straw and placed it gently against her lips. He didn’t say anything.
Izzy drank slowly.
After drinking the water, he pulled the straw away. Then he set the cup down and looked at her again.
The door opened. Two nurses entered, followed by a doctor. The older woman wore a white coat and walked straight to Izzy’s side.
“She’s awake,” Liam said.
One of the nurses immediately rechecked the monitor and then moved to adjust the drip on Izzy’s IV. The doctor pressed lightly on different parts of her abdomen, checked her pupils, and asked her to follow a light with her eyes. Izzy did as instructed, though her movements were slow. Her limbs felt stiff, and her head was still heavy.
Another nurse took her temperature and noted it down on the chart. Blood pressure was checked. Someone recorded her pulse. The doctor asked a few more questions, then made a few notes of her own.
“You’ve been unconscious for two days,” the doctor said. “You’re lucky. Considering what happened, your initial results look stable. We’ll do another set of tests in a few hours. For now, rest.”
The nurses made a few final adjustments to the monitors, then stepped back. One of them glanced at the clock, scribbled something on the chart, and handed it to the doctor. The doctor nodded, then turned toward the door.

They left together, the door clicking softly behind them.
The room fell quiet again. Only the steady beep from the monitor remained.
Izzy shifted slightly, but the motion sent a flare of pain through her ribs. She stopped and exhaled slowly. Her fingers tightened around the blanket.
“Just as we expected, they actually tried to-”
Izzy stopped when Liam interrupted her.
“I made a mistake.”
She frowned and looked at him. Liam didn’t explain right away. Instead, he moved closer to the bed, then suddenly lowered himself onto one knee. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small box. He opened it.
A diamond ring sat inside.
Izzy stared at it. “What–What are you doing?”
Liam looked up at her. “I thought I was going to lose you. I should’ve never agreed to that plan. I was careless. It’s my fault.”
Izzy blinked. “Liam… get up.”
But he didn’t move. “I was in a meeting when they told me. I didn’t wait for details. I know you told me not to come right away. You wanted space, so they’d take the bait. It was a
mistak
I shouldn’t you let you do that. When I saw the footage- your body under that car, blood on the pavement–without me there…”
He stopped. A tear rolled down his cheek.
Izzy didn’t say anything, surprised at his sudden outburst.
“I love you,” he said. “I’ve loved you since we were younger. I never said anything because I thought you hated me.”
She stared at him, frozen.
“I knew about the clause in your grandfather’s will,” he continued. “I thought if I told you the truth back then, you’d never speak to me again. You already didn’t want anything to do with me. I thought keeping my distance was the safest option. However, I never stopped watching you.”
Izzy’s hand tightened around the blanket.
