The loud slapping sound echoed inside Calen’s condo. His head jerked to the side. For a second, he didn’t even realize what just happened until he saw Pamella standing in front of him. 

“What the hell are you doing here?” Calen asked, rubbing his cheek. 

Pamella stormed past him and into the living room. “Where have you been? Why didn’t you show up to the fitting?” she snapped. “You think you can ignore my calls? My messages? You flew off, disappeared, and left me to deal with everything!” 

She spotted the stack of papers scattered across the coffee table. Her eyes narrowed. She stepped toward them. 

However, Calen moved quickly and blocked her. “Don’t touch those.” 

Pamella looked at him, her arms folding tightly. “What are you up to?” 

“Get out.” 

“You think you can just walk away from this?” She took a step closer. “You disappear for days, ditch the office, and now I find you holed up here like nothing happened? Calen, this isn’t just about you. There are contracts. Expectations. And if you think for one second that I won’t cancel my father’s investments and go to the media with what you-” 

“Do it,” Calen said. 

Pamella froze. 

He stepped closer. “Go ahead. Cancel the deals. Call your father. Tell the press whatever you want. I don’t care.” 

The silence after that filled the entire room. Pamella didn’t move. Her lips parted slightly, but she didn’t speak. Seeing this. Calen quickly turned away from her and started gathering the papers on the table. 

“Is this about Izzy?” Pamella asked, her voice cutting through the silence. 

Calen didn’t look at her. He stacked the documents carefully, as if ignoring her would make her vanish. 

Pamella let out a short laugh and stepped closer. “Unbelievable. So that’s it, huh? You’re throwing everything away because of her?” 

“That’s none of your business,” Calen said without turning around. 

Parnella crossed her arms. “What the hell is going on in that rotten mind of yours? You and Izzy are done. She’s probably lying somewhere in a coma–or worse, dead! And here you are, destroying everything you worked for because of a damn woman? Have you completely lost your mind?” 

Calen gritted his teeth. His jaw tensed, but he said nothing. 

She kept going. “You disappear for days, miss your fitting, ignore calls from the board, and now you act like I’m the problem?” 

Still nothing. 

Inside, Calen’s thoughts spiraled. He didn’t care about the fitting. He didn’t care about Pamella’s media threats. None of it mattered. 

Izzy got hurt. And it happened because he wasn’t there. 

She didn’t call him. She didn’t even text. But when the news broke about the crash, something in him cracked.

Maybe if he hadn’t let her go. Maybe if he had fought harder. Maybe if he had just stayed beside her instead of giving her space to make mistakes. 

He forgave her. For everything. The silence. The secrets. The distance. 

She was scared. That’s all. And he understood it now. She needed someone to protect her. Someone who actually cared. 

She needed him. 

And he would’ve been there–if he hadn’t been too proud, too caught up in everything else. 

He would fix this. 

She would wake up. She had to. And when she did, she’d understand. 

She’d see that no one else could love her like he did. He could give her a new start. They could have the future they were meant to have. 

She’d forgive him. 

She always did. 

They just needed time. 

He just had to get her back. 

Pamella was still talking behind him, but Calen tuned her out. His hand closed over the last sheet of paper. 

None of this mattered anymore. 

He just heard that Amalia had been released, and he had just asked his people to find out who helped Amalia. He thought that the motive behind her release was pretty clear. It was because of Izzy. 

They must have wanted control of everything. This meant that the possibility that the ones who released Amalia were also the ones after Izzy’s life. 

Calen was trying to piece together the information that he got when Pamella arrived. 

“Say something, goddamnit!” Pamella screamed. This interrupted Calen’s thoughts. 

“Are you really trying to find her?” she continued, asking as she approached him. “Is that why you’re in New York? For crying out loud Calen, answer me!” 

“Didn’t I tell you to leave?” he asked. “Leave now-” 

“Or what?” she hissed. 

Pamella stepped back and then moved toward the side table. She swiped her hand across it, knocking over a vase. It crashed to the floor. Water spilled across the hardwood. 

Calen didn’t move. 

She grabbed a stack of files next. “You think I’m just going to stand here while you keep obsessing over her?” 

He caught her wrist before she could throw it. “Put it down.” 

“You don’t get to tell me what to do!” she snapped, yanking her arm back. “You think she’ll forgive you if she finds out the truth? You think you’ll crawl back into her arms after what you did to her? Don’t be delusional!”

Pamella pointed at him. “I will tell her. About us. About how long we’ve been sleeping together–how you kept coming back even when you said you loved her. And don’t think I don’t have proof. I do.” 

She stepped closer. “You want to keep pretending you’re the heartbroken lover? Then let’s see how she reacts when she finds out about all the other women too. Should I list them?” 

Calen’s hand moved before his mind caught up. The slap echoed across the room. 

Pamella stumbled back, one hand flying to her cheek. “Did you–Did you just slap me!?” she hissed. 

However, Calen was simply too angry to even care. Calen stared at her, chest rising and falling. “Get out.” 

“Do you know what you are doing, Calen? Hurting me? Really?” Her hand stayed on her cheek as she took one step back. then another. 

“Get out,” he said again, louder. 

Pamella’s face twisted. “We’re not done, Calen! Remember that!” She turned and stormed out of the condo, slamming the door behind her.
