Lucas’s eyes widened in horror. Denial was no longer an option. Tears streamed down his face as he sank to his knees, his voice a strangled cry of anguish.

Simone lunged, the knife plunging into his back. He collapsed, gasping for air, his eyes fixed on her.

“I'm not finished,” she said, her voice cold. “Seven years ago, Lydia spilled the soup I made for you. You were furious. You slapped her, refused to let her eat. You know why she did that? Because she saw me poison your food. But you didn’t even give her a chance to explain.”

“There were so many incidents like that. No one loved you more than Lydia. But you treated her like dirt. You were a terrible brother. You didn’t deserve her love.”

Lucas, his eyes filled with regret, his body wracked with pain, choked out the words. "I know. Kill me. Please, just kill me. I don't deserve to live. Let me die!"

Simone smiled cruelly, raising the knife. “As you wish.”

A gunshot echoed through the air. The knife clattered to the ground. Simone crumpled, a neat bullet hole in her forehead.

The police swarmed the area, securing the scene. The ME lowered his gun and walked towards Lucas, his face grim. Without warning, he slapped Lucas hard across the face.

Lucas didn’t even flinch, his bloodied lips trembling as he sobbed silently.

“We just found the last piece of the puzzle, Lucas. The head. It's definitely Lydia. And the evidence in your apartment, the blood, the DNA, it all points to your precious Simone."

"You knew, Lucas. You knew all along. But you chose to protect a monster, to bury the truth. You’ve shamed your parents, your sister, and yourself!"

Lucas choked out the words, “I was wrong.”

“You were wrong on every level, Lucas! You concealed evidence, betrayed your duty as a law enforcement officer. You abused your sister, the one person who loved you unconditionally, and you abandoned her when she needed you most, ignoring your parents' dying wish to protect her. You're a disgrace! You’re the reason Lydia is dead!"

Lucas, his face contorted with grief, scrambled to his feet and ran towards the cliff, his intention clear.

“No, Lucas!” The ME grabbed him, but it was too late.

He had seen the blood staining Lucas’s back, the wound that would change his life forever.
