Epilogue novel My Father's Best Friend

Andrea opened her eyes to a pain that she had always dread and anticipated.

"LANCE!!!" she shouted, and within seconds, Lance entered the bedroom, wearing only his boxers and holding a whisk, his face lined with worry.

"I THINK THE BABY IS COMING!" Andrea shouted again.

Lance's eyes widened, and in haste, went straight to Andrea, throwing the whisk somewhere in the room and carried her out of the room, out of the house and into the car.

As soon as Lance entered the car, he started the engine, and at the same time, called Simon and put him through speakerphone.

"Good morning, Lance. What's so urgent that you're calling at six in the morning?" Simon's groggy voice groaned at the other line.

Andrea involuntarily produced a loud groan, "Can't you go any faster?"

"Oh gosh, Lance! You don't have to let me hear that! For Christ's sakes I'm her father!" Simon shouted at the other line and for a moment, Lance was confused but then it clicked just as at the same time Andrea groaned again.

"Simon, what kind of brain do you have? Andrea's having contractions. We're going to the hospital!" he shouted at Simon.

"Oh," Simon said, embarrassment clear in his voice, "Wait- did you say I'm going to be a grandfather?" he asked.

"Oh yes, dad, that's the context of it. So, will you please get over to the hospital with some clothes for Lance?" Andrea answered, brushing a sweat away from her face.

Lance looked down at what he was wearing and realized he forgot to put on a shirt. Oh well.

"Okay, okay. We are coming! Good luck sweetheart, you can do it!" Simon said and hang up.

"I didn't even realize the water broke!" Andrea exhaled, disappointedly.

Lance thought back to their bed, when his alarm went off, he felt a certain wetness on the bed, but no smell so he figured it was just his sweat or Andrea's.

"I thought that was just sweat," he answered lamely.

"Wow, that's awesome prediction, Lance," Andrea rolled her eyes and before she could say anything, she groaned loudly again, Lance's hand automatically took hers, "We're close Andrea,"

He remembered the day when they got married and the beautiful smile Andrea had on her face when she was reciting her vows, and him his, and felt bad to see Andrea looked awfully pained, her face sweaty even with the air conditioning unit on max.

"I'm sorry Andrea," Lance murmured and squeezed Andrea's hands again before looking back to the road and focusing on their destination.

"You don't have anything to be sorry about, as long as you wait ten years to get me pregnant again!"

"I can't wait that long!"

"Lance," Simon called breathlessly, Pamela in tow, as he approached Lance pacing back and forth in front of the delivery room. A worried expression plastered on his face.

"How is she?" Pamela asked before Simon could say anything.

Lance shook his head and proceeded to sit on the plastic chairs by the wall, covering his face with both hands, "I don't know. They've been there for ages," he said, worriedly.

Simon sat down beside him and patted him on the back, "You've only been waiting here for an hour and a half, don't be ridiculous. Andrea will be fine," he reassured.

"Fine! You should have seen Andrea's face with all that contractions. She was so pained!" Lance groaned, "This is all my fault! I shouldn't have impregnated her!" Lance muttered to himself.

Simon looked at Pamela and she smiled, Lance once again proved that he loves their daughter very much, what with his hysterical and then Simon laughed.

"What is so funny? Your daughter's giving birth to some creature we made!" Lance pointed out, making Simon laugh more.
