She always said she didn’t want any, but he knew it was a lie—he had seen it in her eyes when she was around Peter’s daughters.

Diana had been out of the country all week, traveling to Japan for business. Maximus had wanted to go with her, but Lucius’s sudden arrival had changed everything. He couldn’t abandon his family now, so they had adjusted their plans at the last minute.

His fiancée was arriving tomorrow, just in time for the wedding. He had planned everything so that if any complications arose, she would have an extra day to prepare. But so far, everything was going according to plan.

Maximus was lost in these thoughts when Serenity emerged from the fitting room.

"Alright, Maximus! Let’s go for a walk and talk. Are you going to tell me what’s going on?" she asked, curiosity evident in her tone.

"Let’s go, as you say—walk and talk."

After driving for a few minutes, they arrived at a park. Maximus bought an ice cream and sat on a bench beside Serenity.

"Have I ever told you that this stage of my life scares me?" Maximus said with resignation.

"No… Why?"

"Why does it scare me? Because, in your case, I wasn’t around much. My past with your mother, the circumstances… all of it kept me away from you. But with the rest of my children, I have to admit—I always prioritized work over them. In my mind, I was doing it for them, to give them the best life possible. But in reality…"

Serenity frowned. "Maximus, is something wrong?"

"Paul."

"What about Paul? He’s a good kid. A little shy, but once he trusts you, he’s a sweetheart. He’s also incredibly protective of Maurice.

"I know my son has a good heart. And that’s exactly why I feel like this…"

"Like what?"
