I was holding the phone next to my ear, feeling nauseated. The world around me was spinning. Martha shouted something over the phone. She was calling my name, but my brain kept refusing to face the reality.

"Lilith! Are you there?!" Martha yelled, finally breaking through my bewilderment.

"This can't be true… I know it can't be true!" I shouted, angry and desperate.

"That would explain why he didn't call you or text you back," she said, knocking me down with sudden realization.

"I got a text from him…" I mumbled, choking on the air I was breathing.

"What?! When?! Why didn't you say anything?!" Martha burst out.

I swallowed, preparing myself to tell her the truth. "He wrote that the child is his… He wrote ‘goodbye’ to me… That he was sorry…" I struggled to pull in a breath.

"Oh, God…" she muttered.

"I…" Fisting my hand, I squeezed out through my throat, "I slept with Draven."

"Oh, God!" she repeated, disgust and disappointment audible in her tone.

"What was I supposed to do?!" I snapped. "Sariel texted that it was over between us, and Draven is my mate!"

"You should have at least waited a day or two!" she thundered.

"Waited for what?!" I roared, "Should I stay, waiting for him to change his mind?! I'm not a saint, and I'm not perfect! I'm a human, and I do have my limits!"

Martha was silent for a while. "I'm sorry… I have no right to judge you… and if the King is truly dead-"

"Please…" I stopped her from finishing that sentence. "What if it was someone who collaborates with Elora who passed the message about his death? It is possible… We cannot say for sure that it is real."

I forced myself to do logical thinking. I used it as an anchor that could prevent me from going insane.

"You are right." Martha's voice became calmer.

"I… I can try calling him again…?" I suggested but needed Martha's support.

"Lilith…" She let out a deep sigh, "What if you are right, and he is alive? He could not answer your call because he doesn't want to talk to you. Either way, you won't know the truth. Could you handle this?" Her words pierced my heart even more than the last message from Sariel.

"Then I will force him to answer, God damn it!" I snapped.

"Lilith… I don't want you to hurt yourself. Just remember that I love you and I'm on your side, no matter what." I heard her smiling through tears.

"I love you too," I said, barely holding my tears, and suddenly realized, "You are no longer safe there. You and Kanan have to leave the Palace. If you need my help, I can get you-"

"Prince Kanan has already prepared our escape, so don't worry. He's the one with all the details, so call him if you'd like to know," she assured me.

I know that Sariel left them a group of bodyguards to protect them, but I couldn't be certain that their lives wouldn't be endangered once Elora claimed herself as a ruler. I didn't quite get how it was even possible for her to just sit on the throne, but I could bet that Kanan would tell me. I was going to call him once I finished talking with Martha, but there was something I had to do first…

I stared blankly at Sariel's number on my phone's screen. It took a lot of shaky breaths before I swiped my finger through the green phone symbol. My pounding heart could nearly burst out of my chest as I lifted the phone to my ear.
