"What the hell was that, Melvin? You scared the hell out of me!"

I wake up some unknown time later on a bed in the infirmary with Alex and my cousin Bethany next to me. They're both looking down at me with equal parts concern and puzzlement.

"What?" I sit up, clutching my head. Fuck, it feels like it's about to explode. "God, what happened?"

"Here." Bethany hands me two white tablets and a cup of water.

"Thanks." I look at her in suspicion, but she gives me a small, tight smile. This girl has never shown any bit of kindness to me ever, and I've known her all my life.

I down the tablets and the water, grateful as it soothes my parched throat. I hand it to Bethany and ask for some more. She doesn't hesitate. She goes to the sink behind her, fills the glass with water, and hands it back to me. I drain it again.

"Can someone tell me what happened, please?" I hand Bethany the empty glass.

"Mom and Dad are on their way," Bethany tells me, patting my hand.

"What? Why?" I must have done something really bad for my uncle to be taking time out of pack business to come out to the school. What did I do, kill Brooklyn during my blackout or something? Hah, yeah.

I look at Alex whose lips are pressed in a tight line. "Did I kill anybody?"

"Not yet," he says, pushing back my hair from my face.

"Okay, you guys are scaring me. What happened?"

"Well, cuz, I had my doubts, but you're a wolf, all right," Bethany says, punching my shoulder.

Alex puts his arms around me and kisses my temple. "Well, Melvin, something really strange happened. Maybe it's because you haven't shifted since you were a kid?"

"What?" I demand, feeling that anger build in the pit of my stomach again.

"Melody, look at your hands," says Bethany.

I gasp. They're covered with black and white fur and my nails have turned into claws. "What the fuck? How the hell do I turn them back to normal?"

"Relax, Melody. You said you came out of your mom as a pup, right? That makes you prime-wolf. Your base form is wolf," Alex says in a soothing voice as he rubs my back.

"Wait, what?"

"You're a wolf that can shift into a human," Bethany explains. "Unlike most of us who are humans who can shift into wolves."

I take a deep breath and exhale slowly. "So, you're telling me I'm a were-girl? Okay, that's crazy. What happened in the hallway?"

Alex sighs and continues to stroke my back. "Well, it's a little hard to explain. As I was trying to hold back Brooklyn from trying to get you, you kind of just stood there, then steam started coming out of you. And then-"

"You frickin' floated in the air, dude! Okay, you didn't fly or anything, but your feet definitely left the ground a few inches," says Bethany.

I turn to her with a grimace. "Are you messing with me?"

Her eyes widen. "Now that I know you're super wolf? Why the hell would I?"
