Fanny realized she couldn't rely on anyone else; she had to think of a way to save herself. "Since you want me to pay for your wife and child, and I can't really fight back, could you at least let me say a few things? Maybe pass them on to my parents when they come looking for me."

This man had taken a dark path for the sake of his family, a testament to how much he loved them.

"Cut the crap," the man snapped, clearly agitated.

Fanny decided to get straight to the point. "My mom's not in great health. She had complications when she had me. If something happens to me, please don't tell her. I'm afraid she wouldn't be able to handle it. And my dad..."

"Don't be fooled by him being a man. He's got the softest heart and cries at the drop of a hat. If he finds out I'm gone, he'll be heartbroken. Just tell him not to cry. I'll be his daughter in the next life too, and we'll be together again. Oh, and last week he mentioned he was craving a good apple pie from back home. I can't bake him one now, but I've already arranged for someone to send him one."

"My grandparents are old and wouldn't be able to bear the news, either. Just tell them I'm busy with surgeries or studying abroad if they ask about me."

Fanny felt a flicker of hope. He was actually listening.

A man who loves his family must have a sense of responsibility, so Fanny played the understanding card. "He's not doing it on purpose. He's just really busy working, and a man has to earn a living, right? How else would he support a family?"

The man grunted again. "You seem to understand people well."

She paused for a couple of seconds, "Because we never want to feel that helplessness again, watching families like yours broken with grief."

The man went silent, and so did Fanny. She knew he was struggling, torn between the pain of his loss and the anger towards the medical staff.

But Fanny had a feeling he would soften.

Just as she was quietly waiting for him to come to terms, she suddenly heard footsteps.

Her nerves tightened, and the man instantly became alert, yanking Fanny towards him and shouting at the newcomer, "Stay back."

"Let her go, and you can walk away from this," a voice echoed through the air, leaving Fanny stunned.
