It was the middle of the night, and there I was, at O'Malley's Pub, completely gobsmacked to see Susie Collins walk through the door.
Lately, life's been throwing too much at me, and I haven't been able to keep track of her as much as I should. But that doesn't mean I've stopped caring.
Susie was wearing this long, elegant forest-green dress that wasn't revealing at all, which made her stick out like a sore thumb in the chaotic atmosphere of the bar.
I didn’t approach her directly. Instead, I hung back, curious to see what she was up to there.
Susie weaved through the crowd and headed backstage, turning a corner to enter a room.
That was Haley's office.
Was Haley the one who contacted her?
Alarm bells went off in my head, and I quickly moved to the door. Luckily, it was slightly ajar, so I could both see and hear what was going on inside.
“Manager Perez, I'm starting college next week, so I won't be able to work here anymore. Could you settle my performance fees?” Susie's words caught me completely off guard.
So she’d been working here to make money, and it sounded like she'd been doing it for a while.
“Heading to Harvard?” Haley asked with a warm smile.
Susie nodded, “Yes, Harvard.”
“That’s a great school. My husband graduated from there,” Haley mentioned Aiden Martin.
I couldn't believe she had the nerve to bring him up, especially in the dead of night when one might think Aiden's ghost could show up and demand justice.
“Oh,” Susie replied faintly, leaving Haley at a loss for words.
But Haley seemed keen on chatting and switched topics, “What major are you going for?”
“Medicine,” Susie answered, keeping the conversation going.
Haley raised an eyebrow, “Such a beautiful girl wanting to study medicine?”
I was aware of Haley's schemes; she was just trying to lure Susie in.
I decided not to intervene, wanting to see how Susie would handle it. From their conversation, it was clear Susie wasn't falling for it.
“Thank you, Manager Perez, for considering me,” Susie began, showing some gratitude.
I had to admit, the kid was quite smooth.
“But maybe you don’t know—my biggest dream is to go to college, so I’d like to focus on that for now. I’ll think about my future career when the time comes,” she skillfully turned down Haley without causing offense.
With that, Haley couldn’t press further and nodded, “Alright, if you ever need anything, come find Haley. I wish you all the best in your studies.”
Haley then pulled out a box from her drawer, “Here, a little gift from me to celebrate your new journey.”
Susie shook her head, “No need, really. Thank you, Manager Perez.”
