He'd really do it!
But how am I supposed to take something I don't have?
“Well, then stop wasting time and just bury me here,” I said without a hint of fear.
Perhaps it was because I'd been through so much that I'd developed a resistance to being scared.
“Allen, you see it yourself, there's nothing here. Ernest told me he'd left it here. That's why I didn't spill the beans when you guys asked. Turns out, he played me too,” I said with a self-deprecating chuckle.
I was trying to make him think Ernest had deceived me, so they wouldn’t trace it back to Yolande.
“Don’t try to pull a fast one on me. You and your partner are slippery as fish, always up to something. You're definitely hiding something,” Allen retorted, still skeptical.
Then one of his goons chimed in, “Mr. Clark, maybe we should dig a bit more? It might be buried deeper.”
Seriously...
“Then what are you standing around for? Dig!” Allen barked, dragging me over to the pit as his men started digging furiously.
They dug until they hit rock bottom, but found nothing.
“Mr. Clark, there really isn’t anything...” the goon said cautiously.
The next moment, Allen lashed out with a kick, sending the guy tumbling into the pit.
“No point in wasting time if there’s nothing. You can just stay down there,” Allen growled, embodying pure rage.
After venting his anger, he turned his gaze to me. I met his stare calmly.
Allen nodded slightly, then laughed derisively, “So you’re not talking, huh? Can’t find it, huh? Well then... you’re the perfect hostage. If Ernest tries any funny business, it’ll cost you your life.”
Images of Ernest using Fanny as a hostage flashed before my eyes. “Ernest? Funny business? He’s already on your side. He kidnapped my best friend, and you still don’t trust him?”
Allen stomped ahead, making a call. I had no idea who to, but I overheard him say, “...nothing found, just some old ring.”
Once in the car, Allen took a swig from a flask. I extended my hand towards him.
He glanced at me, “What?”
“Give it to me!”
He rolled his eyes, “What are you asking for?”
I pointed at his hand, “The ring. Ernest gave it to me.”
He smirked, “He put it in an urn for you. Really sounds like a heartfelt gift, doesn’t it? And would you even dare wear it?”
“Why wouldn’t I? If you have a clear conscience, there’s nothing to fear,” I said, reaching over to grab it myself.
