At the Fuller residence, the housekeeper welcomed them in. “Old Mrs. Fuller is busy in the kitchen; please have a seat,” she said.
After that, the housekeeper went to fetch tea and bring a fruit platter for them.
Allison came from an ordinary family. Even though she had enjoyed a life of comfort for more than half of her life, she, like other ordinary elderly people, enjoyed being with children and cooking. She would even knit scarves for the younger ones once in a while.
Despite the undercurrents among the younger members of the Fuller family, there was great respect for Allison.
As Lenora changed her shoes, she asked the housekeeper, “Where’s Grandpa?”
The housekeeper pointed upstairs, “He’s resting, Old Mr. Fuller’s spirits haven’t been great lately.”
Upon hearing this, Lenora and Zachary both showed expressions of concern.
The Fuller family’s business had been passed down to Gerald by the generation before him, but it truly thrived under Gerald’s leadership. In his youth, he had suffered injuries at work, and as he aged, his health had been consistently poor. Moreover, he had undergone a liver transplant and had been on immunosuppressive medications.
“What did Dr. Landon say?” Zachary asked.
The doctor Zachary spoke of was the director of Mercy Hospital, who also served as Gerald’s personal physician.
“He can only do his best,” came the response.
Zachary nodded solemnly.
Lenora went to the kitchen to assist Allison.
“Nora, go outside and take a break. No need to help me; I can manage on my own,” Allison. insisted, shooing Lenora away.
Lenora protested, “Grandma, I’m just sitting outside with nothing to do. I might as well help
you.
Allison disapproved, giving her a stern look. “How can you say you have nothing to do? Sit outside and talk to Zack.”

Seeing
nora silent, Allison added, “Did you have a disagreement with Zack? I’ve seen the news too. Don’t worry; I’ll definitely give him a piece of my mind for you.”
As they sat around the dinner table, Gerald cleared his throat and spoke at a steady pace. “Zack, I heard that the Carston girl has come back here?”
Zachary nodded seriously. “She returned not long ago.”
“I saw the news this morning. There was a history between you two, but it’s over now. You’re married to Nora. In the future, don’t get too close to the Carston girl. What would Nora think? I heard the company has some collaboration with her, but let Nora handle the interaction; you stay out of it.”

Zachary put down his fork, his expression serious as he looked at Gerald. “Grandpa, I’m planning…”
“Hack! Hack!”
Gerald started coughing, interrupting Zachary. “Back then, it was Nora’s father who saved my life. I promised him that I would treat Nora as my own granddaughter. That’s why I chose to marry her to you. Before the wedding. I asked if you were willing, and you agreed to it. I know you’re a responsible man, Zack. Don’t be a man of empty promises. Don’t make me lose respect for you, and don’t make me regret bringing you back.”
Zachary fell silent.
Grandpa’s words carried considerable weight, and Zachary couldn’t argue. His silence served. as a subtle resistance, a quiet persistence.
The atmosphere grew heavy.
