A sudden ringtone shattered the quiet. Clara frowned, impatience etched on her face as she answered the call.

"Clara, what's happened to Ethan? I haven't been able to get through to him all day!"

It was Charlotte, my younger sister.

Even in death, my love for my sister endured. But now, I was utterly helpless to shield her.

"How am I supposed to know where he is?" Clara retorted icily. "Probably out with some woman at a bar. Unlike your brother, I actually have to work and support this family."

The depth of her cruelty was unfathomable. To protect James from my sister's wrath, Clara deliberately lied, fabricating a story about me squandering her money at bars, even though she knew I had been forced to undergo surgery.

"That's impossible! Ethan works tirelessly every day. He would never do that!"

"Ethan never ignores my calls for this long. Please, Clara, just tell me where he is. I'm terrified something has happened to him!"

Clara hung up on Charlotte without giving her a chance to respond.

James's voice was a balm as he reached out and gently took Clara's hand. "Some people are inherently selfish, taking without a shred of gratitude. I truly sympathize with you, Clara. These past years must have been incredibly difficult."

Tears brimming in her eyes, Clara collapsed into his embrace, sobbing uncontrollably. "Ethan constantly fought with me because of her," she cried, "I've tolerated it for far too long."
