I took a week off work and drove home to see my mom.

"Divorce? What in the world are you talking about?" she exploded before I could explain.

"You've always hated Lily!"

"That was then! Now she's loaded! Have you lost your mind?"

"Mom, Lily cheated on me," I said, the words heavy on my tongue.

She went ballistic. "You call yourself a man? You can't even control your own wife? I told you, if she acts up, you put her in her place! Make her afraid of you! You let her walk all over you, and this is what happens!"

"You've been living the high life in San Francisco, a fancy lawyer. You stuck with her through thick and thin, and now that she's rich, you want to bail? How did a smart woman like me raise such a moron?"

She threw my suitcase out the door.

"Just like your deadbeat father!"

"Either make that woman give you everything she's got or knock her up again. Then, when the kid's old enough, divorce her and get a hefty child support check every month!"

I dragged my suitcase down the street, my heart aching. The sun beat down, but I felt cold inside. Money, money, money. That's all that mattered to her. Not once did she offer a word of comfort.

My phone buzzed. Lily: "Where are you? Why aren't you answering me?"

"Come back to San Francisco, babe. I'll pick you up at the station," she said firmly. "We'll go to that new Japanese place you've been wanting to try."

It was a restaurant I'd been talking about forever.

"Don't let her get to you. What matters is us."

I'd heard those words before, during our toughest times.

"Jason, forget about everything else. Just come home. I'll be waiting for you."
