Belle screamed, begged, and thrashed beneath the weight of the men until her voice cracked and faded. Then she watched, in painful, helpless anticipation, as he lifted the dagger and brought it down with force toward her stomach, and immediately, she shut her eyes.
Belle had expected the painful plunge of the dagger into her, but instead, she felt a chill seep into her bones, followed by thunder and the sound of something else ripping through the air. The grip of the men holding her suddenly loosened, and she heard them curse loudly as they all scattered away from her.
Belle’s heart raced. She wondered anxiously what had made them stop and back away... or what had caused the air around her to turn frigid, still, and unbearably heavy.
Unable to stop herself from looking, she risked peeking through her wet lashes before finally opening her eyes.
The wall at the end of the hallway had been torn open, shattered as if something had exploded through it. And standing in the center of the crumbled remains was a figure. She couldn’t see his face clearly, but she knew who he was, by the dark wings that slowly lowered behind him and the suffocating darkness that clung to his presence.
Everyone around her seemed to blur as she watched him, her body half-risen from the cold floor, eyes fixed on him. He stared back at her, and she noticed the hardness in his face soften for a fleeting moment... before it darkened again when his gaze took in the bruises marring her face.
He was drenched from head to toe, and dangerously furious. She could see the dark veins beginning to line his skin, claws slowly growing from his hands, and the small horns rising from his head.
But through it all, Belle wasn’t terrified. Unlike the men around them who began to panic in fear, she felt no alarm. Her heart swelled with a strange warmth, and a thread-like balm washed away the terror that had consumed her only moments ago.
For the first time since the time she began to run for her life, she felt safe, safe enough to let her tears fall freely, rolling down her cheeks.
Her lips trembled as she tried to say his name, and she saw how her tears seemed to make the black veiny lines on his skin grow even darker, as though her pain fed his fury.
"I won’t say this twice," came Rohan’s voice as he watched his wife, but his words were directed at the men surrounding them, all of whom had pulled out their rifles and pointed them toward him.
Yet their eyes could not mask the inevitable terror of witnessing a creature none of them had ever seen before.
He continued to speak, taking in the red bruises and dark marks on her face, the tears swimming in her hazel eyes. "Which one of you fucking bastards did that to her?" he demanded, his eyes finally moving away from her to the men.
Nobody spoke among the crowd, but the way their eyes shifted to a man standing in the center, one who showed not a flicker of fear in his brown eyes, told Rohan all he needed to know.
The man stood still, emotionless, unflinching as he stared Rohan down.
"So what are you?" the Councilman dared to ask.
A dark smile curled Rohan’s lips.
"How about I show you what I am, instead."
And in a blink of an eye, he had moved with a speed none of the men holding their guns on him anticipated and was in front of the Councilman—who, for the first time, looked taken aback and frightened as his neck was gripped by Rohan.
The men around immediately began to fire their weapons, and Rohan, as angry and furious as he was, moved without releasing the Councilman’s neck and evaded every single bullet fired his way until their guns went empty. His fingers tightened around the man’s neck.
"Tsk, which hand did you use to hit her?" he asked the wide-eyed man, whose eyes were turning bloodshot and face crimson.
When the man didn’t speak, Rohan raised his other hand and landed a blow to his face. The blow broke his jaw.
"Which of your fucking useless hands did you use to hit her?!" he growled in a deep, low voice. And when the man didn’t speak, he raised another blow to his face that hit his eye.
