“I’ll agree to the divorce,” he finally said.

Brian bent down and gently tucked the blanket around Jessica, his movements tender and careful.

He couldn’t believe his ears.

“Did I hear that right? Just half an hour ago in court, you were arguing with me tooth and nail, swearing you’d never agree to a divorce. And now you suddenly change your tune? Brian, are you messing with us?”

If he had just agreed to the divorce earlier, maybe Jessi wouldn’t have ended up in the hospital at all.
