Dereck and Stella didn’t mention Jacob again. Jessica breathed a sigh of relief, stayed home to spend the day with them, and declined their offer to stay overnight, returning to her apartment after dinner.

Meanwhile, after dinner, Jacob received a call from Brian. Learning that Brian had a last–minute meeting and would be two hours late to visit, Jacob became extremely dejected.

“Mr. Atkinson, you’re still on an IV,” Jim said, startled. He quickly put his hand on Jacob to stop him and glanced worriedly at his wrist, relieved to see no bleeding. If anything happened to Jacob under his care, Brian would definitely fire him.

“It’s too stuffy in here. I want to walk around,” Jacob mumbled. He didn’t want to lie alone in bed—it felt too lonely.

Jim hesitated at his words.

Jacob looked at Jim pitifully and said, “Just let me walk around. I promise I won’t tell Brian, and I’ll ask him to give you a raise.”

After staring at each other for a few seconds, Jim gave in. Before thinking about a raise, he needed to keep Jacob stable.

“Fine, but go slow. I’ll carry your IV,” Jim said, removing the drip stand.

Jacob sighed in relief and walked out with Jim. The corridor was empty, with only occasional cries from nearby hospital rooms followed by parents- mostly mothers–soothing their children.

As Jacob passed a half open private room, he saw a strange woman inside hugging a child and cooing softly. His eyes filled with envy. He missed his

Jessica didn’t need to hug or comfort him–just one look would be enough. But thinking that Jessica had rejected him, Jacob lowered his head in disappointment.

Jim thought about Brian’s family situation and sighed silently before saying gently, “Mr. Atkinson, we’ve been out for a while. It’s cold at night should we go back?” He was terrified Jacob might catch a cold.

Jacob remembered promising Jessica he’d be a good boy. Although he wanted to keep walking, he decided to head back. Jim hurried to follow.

They were just a few steps from Jacob’s room when the door of the adjacent ward opened.

A nurse pushed a trolley out, and Jacob instinctively looked inside. In the empty room, only a little girl sat on the bed.

Jacob walked over quickly and stared at the girl, who was reading alone, asking blankly, “Where are your parents?”

The girl, Wanda Manning, looked up at him and said coldly, “They’re all busy working and have no time for me.

Jacob instantly felt they were kindred spirits and was about to chat with Wanda when the nurse called out, “Jacob, I was just coming to find you. It’s time to take your medicine.”

“Right, Mr. Atkinson. Let’s go back and take your medicine first. It’s late today–can we play with her tomorrow?” Jim chimed in, trying to coax him.

Jacob nodded dejectedly. He waved at Wanda and said, “Goodbye. I’ll come see you tomorrow.”

Wanda nodded indifferently and ignored him.

Jacob wasn’t upset. He smiled and waved again before returning to his room. Because of this small incident, he began to look forward to tomorrow.

At that moment, Jessica was being tormented by sudden abdominal pain. The pain subsided quickly, but it didn’t ease her worry. She lay on the bed, pale–faced, touching her stomach, and decided to go for a prenatal checkup the next day.

Early the next morning, after breakfast, Jessica drove to the hospital she often visited. She told herself it was just because she was familiar with the doctors there, nothing more.
