Chapter 399
Jessica watched his retreating figure, her fingers involuntarily curling into her patms. The lingering heat from the milk scared to seep into her the sending her heart into a wild, uncontrollable rhythm.
But as soon as a new message
popped up on her phone, her heart immediately plummeted to rock bottom.
Horrifying bruises covered the woman’s arms, but the most terrifying sight was the distinct shoe print stamped across her protruding belly. At the sight of this, Jessica’s hand jolted and sh
nearly dropped her phone.
Madeline: [Jessica, I’m at the hospital. You wouldn’t dare come see me, would you?)
her thoughts.
She wondered, ‘Is that Brian? Did he find out Madeline was hurt and rushed to see her?‘ She crept to the door and peered through the peephole, only to find nothing.
Realizing what she was doing, she became solemn instantly and thought, ‘It’s none of my business who he’s seeing. Likewise, what doen Madeline getting hurt have to do with me anyway?
‘So she can hurt me, but I can’t even fight back? What kind of messed–up logic is that?”
Jessica’s face was ice–cold as she thought it through. Finally, she simply turned off her phone, tossed it aside, and climbed into bed. She told herself, I’m just gonna go to bed.‘
The next morning, the moment Brian heard the door next door open, he immediately flung his own door wide. “Jessi, have you had breakfast yet?! boiled a few eggs. Why don’t you try one?”
As he spoke, Brian firmly pressed the still–warm hard–boiled egg into Jessica’s palm, giving her no chance to refuse. But still seething over last night’s events, Jessica threw the egg right back at him and snapped, “Fuck off!”
Brian was caught completely off guard. The egg struck him square on the chin, leaving an instant bruise. But he paid no heed to his injury. Instead, he gazed down at the shattered hard–boiled egg on the floor, his expression grave.
Jessica’s gaze flickered at the sight of the fresh bruise on his chin. Instinctively, she recoiled a step, her hands rising protectively in front of her chest.
“Jessi, what are you so afraid of? Do you really think I’d hit you over this?” As Brian frowned deeply, a thought flickered through his mind. ‘Do I really come off that badly to her?‘
Jessica remained silent. Blame it all on that nightmare–ever since then, she’d been on edge. Seeing her like this, Brian could only let out a long, weary sigh. “Jessi, have a little more faith in me, okay?”
As he spoke, he bent down to pick up the cracked hard–boiled egg, making sure Jessi wouldn’t accidentally step on it later.
“It’s okay if you don’t want the hard–boiled egg. How about I make you an omelette next time? Or, if there’s anything else you fancy, just tell me,” he rambled on, fussing endlessly.
“Would you just stop already?” Jessica snapped, She muttered curses under her breath the whole way, yet deep down, she begrudgingly admitted that his persistence had actually calmed her chaotic heart.
She thought, ‘Maybe that nightmare really was just a dream. Maybe Brian truly only cares about the baby Madeline is carrying and doesn’t actually have feelings for her.
‘No, no, no. Jessica, what are you even thinking? Is there really any difference between the two? It’s still considered cheating either way.
