"Emily, you've got to be careful, you're being deceived!"

Emily responded coldly, "I have no money, no house, and I'm burdened with a sick father. What's there worth deceiving me for?"

Nathan's tone carried a hint of warning, "You're a woman, and a pretty one at that. I'm a man, and I understand men best. Men's intentions towards women go beyond just money, you should understand what I mean."

"Are you saying I'm being deceived for sex?"

"You know best in your heart, Emily. If you want to retaliate against me, fine, but don't play games with your body!"

"I'm not joking!" Emily didn't want to continue the argument with him anymore. "Nathan, even if I am being deceived, at least he paid for my father's surgery! Without him, my father might already be in the grave!"

Nathan obviously hadn't considered this aspect. He furrowed his brows, "You sold yourself to earn money for your father's surgery? Emily, why didn't you come to me for help? Why go to someone else?"

"I did come to you!" Emily let out a sigh. "Remember the time I asked you for three hundred thousand? You refused and accused me of being greedy!"

"Three hundred thousand... I thought you were asking for divorce compensation..." Nathan cooled down, his voice lowering. "I'll transfer the money to you now. You give it back to that man and cut ties with him."

Emily smiled bitterly, "We've been married for four years, and you've never given me money. Why do you want to give me money now? Do you think that even if we divorce, I can't be with another man?"

"Think whatever you want. Give me your account number, Emily, and I'll transfer the money to you now."

"No need."

"Emily, can't you see when someone's trying to help you? Get it straight!"

"I don't need your charity, Nathan. Besides, I don't even have a bank card. In the four years of our marriage, your mother forbade me from using any bank cards. She always thought I was a thief coveting your family's money, but the truth is I have no savings at all."

Nathan hung up the phone in frustration.

Sophia, watching from the sidelines, timely brought a glass of lemon water. "Emily is being foolish. Don't be too angry. Have some lemon water to cool off, and I'll talk to her tomorrow."

After downing the refreshing lemon water, Nathan's anger subsided a little.

Sophia smiled and spoke softly, her voice soothing. "You married her because your grandfather wanted to fulfill his promise. In fact, you don't have much emotional foundation. These four years have been exhausting for you, I understand."

Nathan held her hand, gently placing it in his palm. "Emily hasn't had it easy either. I know my mother's temper isn't good. Over these years, I haven't been home much, and she's had to endure my mother's temper alone. And these years, she hasn't done anything excessive."

Sophia applied a bit more pressure with her fingers but remained silent.
