Chapter 1334: It never was

"The dinner is over... for the two of you."

Mr. and Mrs. Davis frowned, deeply displeased by Charles’s remark. It wasn’t that they wouldn’t leave, but this involved their son as well. Moreover, the way Charles said it felt insulting—like he was kicking them out.

How rude.

"Mr. Bennet, I don’t understand what is so wrong with our presence," Mrs. Davis said, stepping forward. "As a parent, you should understand us better than anyone. We are doing our best for our son and for this family meeting."

"Then your best is not enough."

This time, Allison spoke. Her voice was gentle yet firm. The Davises turned to her, but her expression remained composed.

"As a parent, I had hoped you would understand us more than anyone," she continued, "because I doubt you would appreciate it if we treated you the way you’ve treated us tonight."

"What exactly is wrong with what we’re doing, Mrs. Bennet?" Mr. Davis scowled, turning to face her. "Did you not hear what we said earlier?"

"My husband and I postponed everything just to be here," Mrs. Davis added. "We are not trying to look down on you. However, my husband and I are in the middle of a very important deal—one we have been working on for years."

"Then just go," Jessa chimed in, jerking her chin toward the front door. "If that deal is more important than your son, go ahead. I’m sure he’d prefer that instead of sitting here, watching you prove how insignificant this dinner is to you."

"Hah!" Mrs. Davis scoffed, pausing when she caught the glow of her phone’s screen out of the corner of her eye.

"Goodness." Jessa shook her head and downed the rest of her drink. "I swear, I’ll grab her hair—stop me, darling."

Lester winced and quickly grabbed his wife’s hand, knowing full well Jessa meant it. He didn’t want this to escalate into a catfight.

As the tension in the air thickened, a soft chime rang in everyone’s ears. No one paid it any mind, all waiting for the next rebuttal.

"Hon, let’s just go," Mrs. Davis huffed sharply, casting her husband a look. "They’ll never understand."

Mr. Davis nodded and turned to his son. "Finn, we apologize, but it seems your future in-laws were just waiting for us to make a mistake so they could pick on us."

"Finn, let’s go," Mrs. Davis urged. "This isn’t going to work tonight."

"He’s not going anywhere," Charles grunted. "Not with the two of you."

"That’s not your decision to make, Mr. Bennet," Mr. Davis argued. "If you and I can’t see eye to eye because of your unwillingness to put yourself in our shoes, this union is going to be very difficult."

"Marriage isn’t that hard."

A familiar voice silenced the room. fгeewebnovёl.com

Mr. and Mrs. Davis turned toward the source, their eyes widening in recognition as the figure approached Charles from the side.

"I’m sorry I’m late," Zoren said politely, bowing his head to his father-in-law. "I did my best to be here. I hope I haven’t missed out on all the wine."

Charles snorted and tipped his head. "Get in your seat, boy."

"Yes, sir." Zoren lifted his head slightly before turning to the couple. "It’s been a while, Mr. and Mrs. Davis."

"Zoren Pierson?" Mr. Davis blurted out, his brows knitting as his wrinkles deepened. "What are you doing here?"
