"He put a hit on her, huh? Click some more photos for me because we need to get out of here—fast."

Dean was not happy to be ordered around by Atlas, but he did it anyway. While Atlas took pictures of the investigation board, Jonathan focused on the mini laboratory and everything in it.

Their phones flashed one after another, making sure they gathered everything they could. Not that they were in a hurry—at least, they didn’t want to be in a hurry. fгeewёbnoѵel.cσm

But once they finished and were about to walk out, Dean glanced at the key in Atlas’s possession.

"What’s that key for, though?" he asked out of pure curiosity.

Atlas’s steps slowed as they neared the door, gazing down at his hand. The keycard had been given to them by the bar staff before they were led into the underground.

"Now that you mention it..." he trailed off, wondering where they would use this. It didn’t look like there was any other hidden compartment or door inside the vault. "Stay here. I’ll go check inside in case I missed something."

Dean’s brows rose, staring at Atlas before he shrugged. He stayed by the door, moving the chair away, and then held it open. As he watched Atlas touch the walls or look for anything to use the card for, he blinked lazily.

’If I close this door... he’ll be fine, right?’ he wondered, a little tempted to leave the man here, even if just for a day.

He could just imagine a day without Atlas Bennet.

What a dream.

But before Dean could even let that intrusive thought win him, he heard a strange knocking noise.

Knock... knock...

"Hmm?" His brows rose, eyeing Atlas, who was knocking on a tile just next to the wall of information. "What’s that?"

Atlas didn’t answer, pulling one of the pieces of paper from it and knocking on the tile again.

Knock...

The sound made a hollow echo. He moved his knuckles and knocked again, hearing the same noise. But when he extended his arm and knocked farther away, the tile created a different, quieter sound.

"What? Is there another cabinet in there?" Dean asked, stepping inside, curious about what else this place had in store for them.

"I’m not sure," Atlas replied, knocking again on the first spot, which produced a louder noise. On the third knock, Dean was already standing beside him, knocking on the other area.

Knock... knock... BAM!

Both men jolted at the sudden creak and loud bam. They turned their heads to the entrance, their eyes widening as their breath stopped.

The door... closed.

"Ah, shit!" Dean panicked, rushing to the closed vault. His eyes shook as he scanned the back of the door, feeling it with his palms to check for anything—a button, a secret lever—anything! "Shit, shit, shit!"

Atlas, on the other hand, quickly pulled his phone out to call someone. But as expected, there was no reception in this underground space.

"Damn," he hissed, his grip on his phone tightening.

"Fuck!" Dean’s yell echoed louder now that the vault had closed. He punched it, only for it to ring more sharply, but nothing happened.

Atlas’ eyes burned with displeasure as he glared at Dean. "Didn’t you put the chair in there?"

"I did! But—" Dean stopped, not out of a realization that he forgot to put the chair back when he walked in. He stopped because he glared back at Atlas. "Are you seriously going to blame me right now?"
