Verian was still asking about it in the car, “What does that mean about what you said earlier? What do you mean by I’m the only person that can get Heaton to appear? How do I do that?”

Zion stared at Verian with his dark burning gaze and said, “Can we not mention his name from now till I leave? You belong to me now.”

Verian was speechless and began to quiet down.

After Zion started the engine, Verian looked at him and asked after a brief moment, “Then can I ask you a question?”

“You can if it’s unrelated to him.”

“Why do you like me that much? You’ve only seen me twice and you shouldn’t like me that much, right?”

Verian could feel that Zion’s love for her was strong and was not any lesser than Heaton’s.

Zion took a deep look at her and said, “If it wasn’t for you, Heaton and I might’ve already been long dead.”

Verian’s heart was startled as she said, “So, you’re saying that I’ve saved you once before?”

“Yeah, that was during the first time I met you.”

“What exactly happened?”

Zion began to slowly explain, “Ten years ago, due to Heaton’s depression, he created me to shoulder all of his depression and sorrow. As long as he’s depressed, I will appear and he’ll lose all sense of consciousness to forget all of his sorrow. However, I started to drown in all of his sorrow. I appeared because of his emotions and I’ve always been the only one to shoulder all of his pain.”

Was this what Dr. Jarret mentioned? When a person was unable to withstand their negative emotions and was unwilling to open up, their minds would switch on their defense mechanisms to manifest a different personality to shoulder their pain?

Verian’s heart began to wrench in pain.

She was hurt because she was helpless to Heaton and felt bad for Zion for always having to endure Heaton’s pain.

“What happens next? How did you run into me?”

“I thought about committing suicide that year.”

Zion’s mind drifted back to ten years ago…

That night was extremely dark. He was walking toward the sea and when he was just about to be engulfed by the rising tidal wave, he heard a scream nearby.

“Hey!”

A young girl ran toward him and immediately grabbed onto him. She exclaimed, “Are you mad? Do you know that it’s really dangerous?”

The girl was pulling his arm and was trying desperately to pull him back to shore.

“You wouldn’t be trying to commit suicide now, would you? You’re so young and yet you want to die?”

This night was completely shrouded in darkness and not a single hint of the moonlight could be seen on the beach. They could only make out of the rough outlines of each other and hear each other’s voices but their faces were obscured.

Zion followed the girl back to shore and sat on the beach together. He said, “I’m nothing more than a shadow and no one would care if I die.”

The girl grunted and began bursted out laughing. She said, “How is that possible, don’t you have a family? Besides, how could you call yourself a shadow? You’re still you and you won’t be anyone else’s shadow. You should still be very young and wouldn’t it be too bad if you’ve died and I didn’t stop you today?”

“I don’t have a family nor do I have… friends.” He seemed helpless.

The girl suddenly reached out and tugged him. When she felt his hand, she shook it and spoke in a cheerful tone, “I am Verian Mont and I don’t have many friends. Why don’t we be friends?”

He was completely stunned.

There were subtle faint lights and sounds calling out from a nearby distance.

“Verian! Verian!”

Verian immediately got up from the beach and said, “My step-mother is calling out for me. I can’t talk any longer and I need to rush home or else, she’ll complain about me to my dad.”

Verian then turned around and rushed off but she soon turned back around and asked him, “Oh right, what is your name?”

“I…”

He did not have a name.

“Why don’t I wait for you here tomorrow. I will tell you my name then.”
