Brad felt a sharp ache in his chest. "Nadine, you know damn well that's not what I meant! Jean is locked in my basement right now. I can take you to see her!"

It hit him then that no matter how much he tried to explain, Nadine wouldn't believe him. That realization left him feeling utterly powerless.

His voice rose because he felt misunderstood. Once he realized he was overreacting, he hurriedly toned it down and said, "Jean is seriously ill. She doesn't have the strength or the will to plan any of this!"

Jean had been waiting for a kidney transplant, but a suitable match had yet to be found. Until then, all she could do was rely on medication and dialysis to keep her condition under control.

Not long ago, she'd been confined to the basement, where the cold, damp air and lack of proper food and warmth took a toll on her health. The fever she developed almost cost her her life.

Even at this moment, she lay weak in a specially prepared room in the Hamilton manor, isolated, without a phone or connection to the outside world.

Yet, for some reason, Nadine thought he was protecting Jean. It felt like he was talking to a wall.
