Astrid’s POV

The sun kissed my skin as I stood on the shoreline, watching Ryker and Killian splash in the surf.

Laughter carried on the breeze, mingling with the rhythmic crash of the waves.

For once, I allowed myself to relax, to pretend that everything was exactly as it should be.

We were like a real family bonding together at the beach. Ryker’s smile — bright and carefree — was enough to make m believe in the illusion, even just for a moment.

I imagined everything was well with us, Killian and I were still married and that Ryker thinks I’m his mother.

It was a good thought, a great illusion, but it was far from the truth. Still, I couldn’t help it. It was nice to indulge myself with the fantasy.

I let myself breathe, inhaling the salty tang of the sea breeze. It was a rare thing, this kind of peace. I’ve never felt this peaceful since I found out that my son is alive.

For the first time, I felt I was alive again. Being with my son, seeing him safe and happy I finally could feel what happiness is like.

My breath hitched when something pricked at the back of my mind — an unease I couldn’t quite shake.

Even before we had left the Pack, that feeling had already lingered like a shadow creeping into my thoughts as we travelled to the beach.

The Pack is located at a remote spot in the middle of the forest just like any other Packs. To go to the nearest beach, we had to travel so far.

Something about the distance gnawed at me. With the recent rogue attack, it felt unsafe to go on a trip with just the three of us.

However, I chose to keep my fears to myself instead of voicing it to Killian.

I thought about how we never had the chance to have a day like this — just the three of us and now we finally have that chance.

Ryker also wanted to go to the beach, it’s his birthday wish. We already ruined his birthday by using it to lure the rogues to a trap. Killian and I want to make it up to him, we wanted him to be happy.

So, despite the creeping feelings in my gut, I kept my mouth shut. I pushed the unease aside, convincing myself that it was just anxiety, a negative feeling and I can’t let that get in the way of our happiness.

Besides, I’m a best skilled warrior, and Killian is a powerful Alpha; we could protect ourselves if anything went wrong.

What could possibly happen on a sunny beach day?

I scanned the beach, seeing nothing out of the ordinary just the same gentle waves and the distant line where the sky meets the sea.

I forced myself to relax, telling myself it was nothing that I was only scaring myself with my unwarranted thoughts.

“Astrid, Ryker wants to swim!” Killian shouted at me with a smile on his face. “Would you like to swim with us?” he asked me.

I wanted to join in. It’s not every day that we could go to the beach especially since we live in the forests, but my eyes kept drifting back to the horizon.

That’s when I noticed it — something caught my eye, a small figure moved past. It disappeared so fast that anyone would think it was nothing, but I knew then that something was indeed wrong.
