Nova’s POV
I didn’t dream often, or if I did, I never remembered them. But tonight, the images were vivid and relentless, as if the past had clawed its way into my mind and refused to let go.
I was small again, no more than four years old, hiding behind a tree as fire consumed our Pack. The acrid smell of smoke filled my lungs, and the air was thick with the metallic tang of blood.
Wolves howled in agony, their cries echoing through the night. My tiny hands gripped the bark of the tree as I peeked out, my heart racing.
A shadow loomed over me, massive and terrifying. “Stay quiet,” Liora closely whispered to my ear, her voice steady despite the panic in her eyes.
My older sister, Liora, looked young in my dream, still in her early teenage years. We were both just children, but she was forced to act brave to protect me, taking in the role of being the older sister.
I stared at her, my heart beating in fear. She crouched beside me, clutching a blade in one hand and shielding me with the other.
“Run, if I say so,” she added, her tone leaving no room for argument.
I nodded, too scared to speak. Then, the shadow stepped closer, and I saw him.
A man—or at least he looked like one—stood at the edge of the clearing.
His face was shrouded in darkness, but his voice carried through the chaos, smooth and commanding.
“You brought this on yourselves,” he said, addressing the Pack. “Defiance has consequences.”
I didn’t understand his words then, but now, years later, they sent a chill down my spine.
The dream shifted, the edges blurring and twisting.
I was older now, maybe seven or eight, sitting by a campfire in the middle of a dense forest.
Liora was there, her face shadowed by the flickering flames.
She was talking to someone—a man whose voice felt oddly familiar, though I couldn’t see his face.
“You can’t keep running,” the man said. “You belong with us. You’re wasting your potential.”
“I don’t belong anywhere,” Liora replied sharply, her posture tense. “And I won’t risk my sister for your games.”
The man laughed, a sound that made my skin crawl. “You can’t hide forever, Liora. You’ll come back to us. They always do.”
I woke up with a start, my chest heaving as if I’d been running for miles.
“Mommy, did you have a bad dream?” My daughter, stared at me worriedly.
