"Dad only said one thing," Natalie said with a smirk as she looked at Liesel. "Can you guess what it was? He said, 'What a bummer!'"

She chuckled. "He said Heather was really inconsiderate. Why did she choose to kill herself at his birthday party? If she had to die, it should have been at another time.

"Seriously! Why was Heather so inconsiderate? She could've chosen a good day to die instead of making you run around like this."

Liesel knew Natalie was just trying to get under her skin, but she couldn't control the anger rising within her.

She glared at Natalie, who was grinning smugly. Yet Natalie continued to smile and tossed her silver dress at Liesel.

"Do you think I like wearing a dead person's dress?"

Natalie pulled out a new high-end dress and sneered, "I wore that just to see you lose it. And look at you—totally losing it."

With no one else around, Natalie finally showed her true colors when facing Liesel alone.

"So this was all planned?" Liesel let out a chuckle.

"I knew you were trying to provoke me. You were hoping that I would hit you and that Jacob would see it. You want him to be completely disappointed in me and feel sorry for you, don't you? It's fine. I don't mind you using me. I'll play along."

Liesel stepped closer to Natalie. Before Natalie could react, Liesel yanked her hair and dragged her into the bathroom.

Before Natalie could scream, Liesel had already found some tape from somewhere and pasted it over her mouth.

Natalie's eyes went wide in terror as she struggled, but Liesel shoved her into the bathtub and tied her hands with rope.

"This is the room my mom lived in. She died right here, in this very bathtub."

Liesel turned on the tap, and icy water poured out, chilling Natalie to the bone. She shivered uncontrollably.

Natalie's eyes were filled with resentment.

As Liesel pushed the door open, she caught a whiff of smoke. Frowning, she pulled on a mask.

Elijah paused.

Noticing her discomfort, he sighed softly and put out his cigarette. "Sorry, I forgot you don't like the smell of smoke."

Liesel glanced at him but said nothing. She turned to walk off in another direction. She avoided the downstairs banquet hall, as she didn't want to see the phony faces of that crowd.

Elijah followed closely behind her.

Throughout it all, Liesel didn't spare Jacob a single glance.
