Chapter 67
Xavier POV
“Regan, what do you mean risky?” I ask quietly, staring her down
כן!
I know that something is off with my father, but I’m also not about to risk my mate in order to help him, when I don’t know for certain what or if anything is wrong with him. Regan eyes us both nervously. “Well, here’s the thing. If your father is under a spell” she took a deep breath as Xander and I eyed each other. “Then why not go to a witch for help?” she asked.
A witch for help! I stare at her incredulously. “Witches don’t like helping shifters” I comment, pointing out the obvious and not sure why Regan has made this suggestion. “How likely is it that one has helped Heather, let alone will help us break a spell?” I asked reasonably,
“Witches can be biased” Regan agreed calmly “and they do dislike shifters, but it goes both ways. They haven’t been treated nicely by shifters either,” she said calmly.
Of course not. Both species hated each other. However, for the right price, witches will do anything so long as it advantaged
them in some way,
“That’s because there is always a price for their magic.” Xander said, interrupting “and quite often the cost is quite high. If we did go to a witch, who is willing to lose something valuable to get what we need?”
Silence. All three of us look at each other. Suddenly it’s as though Xander has opened up a can of worms, Regan begins to speak. “I’ll do it
Neither Xander nor I are about to let her make a sacrifice for our sake. That’s out of the question.
“The hell you will. This is our father you’re talking about trying to save” I glared “and you’ve already suffered enough. I will do it”
“No, I will,” Xander said heavily, “You shouldn’t have to be the one to always sacrifice something, Xavier. I should be the one to do it this time.”
What in the hell did he mean by that? I hadn’t sacrificed anything. I was more than prepared to do what it took to take care of father and right this pack back to it’s true leadership. Even kill Heather Ramona if it came down to it. Right now, killing Heather Ramona was looking extremely tempting, I had to admit. Still, killing her so soon after the elders visit would only invite more trouble, when we had no proof of any wrongdoing.
“What sacrifices?” I snarl, staring at him and wondering if he’s hit his head or something equally stupid.
one.”
“I know that you decided not to go to college once you found out that we couldn’t be at the same Xander’s voice startles me. I look at him, taken aback, but the knowing look on his face, tells me he already knows everything as I open my mouth to protest and deny it.
“Don’t bother, I know Xavier. You could have gone to your first choice, but you dream college so we could stay together.”
wouldn’t, not without me. You sacrificed your
Regan’s eyes are shining as she looks between the both of us. “Is that true?” she whispered.
“So what?” my voice is defiant. “I would do it again in a heartbeat We’re twins Xander, brothers. I won’t be separated from you, the person
I love the most, in order to go far away from here. I can go to any college, I can’t find another brother.”
He was my best friend, my other half. What if I had found our mate, or he had, only for the other one of us to be separated by hundreds of miles? It didn’t bear thinking about.

Xander looks as though he’s on the verge of breaking down as he continues to look at me. Regan’s tears are trailing down her cheeks. I look at the two of them as though they are crazy.
“So noble” Regan chokes out, a hand on her chest:
I roll my eyes. It was nothing. I would have died if necessary for my brother. In the grand scheme of things, going to a different college barely rated anything. Xander was being stupid, Besides, they had forgotten something. Why was I the only one who was thinking logically right now? Xander was usually the rational one, but that appeared to have vanished for the
moment.
“Somebody needs to remain here, in order to keep an eye on the pack” I pointed out “Xander you’re the better choice. You are least likely to be fooled by anyone and smart enough to know if somebody’s attempting to put you under a spell. It should be you that stays.”
My brother looks as though he’s about to argue with me, but I stare him in the eyes, not willing to back down on this. I won’t have him potentially sacrifice his future if I can help it. Who knows what the witches will demand in return for their help? I will take the hit, the sacrifice. I would do it a hundred times over. There is no way Regan will do it either. She’s too precious to either of us, won’t let them touch a single hair on her head. It’s me or no one.
“Fine,” Xander says, but his expression is displeased as he shoots me a look filled with daggers “I’ll stay but if you give up anything that’s too important…” His voice trails off.
I wonder what constitutes as important and then decide not to ask. Something tells me that I have a different reasoning to Xander.
TI try to persuade them to give us the antidote or whatnot without giving up my left kidney” I joked but Xander wasn laughing, and neither was Regan
I sighed. “The nearest witch coven is approximately two days away. That’s at least four four–day journey taking into account getting there and back, not to mention at least a few hours visiting. So five days” I turned to Xander “can you get by without us for that long?”
Xander looks doubtful for a moment. Not alone, no. But we do have to put in place a Beta” he reminded me “and I could.
you think of appointing Malcolm?” he asked. use the assistance. What do
I gave
it some serious thought. Malcolm was well known and liked in the pack, a strong warrior, loyal to us both, and a good friend. Beta–wise, there was no other person I would trust as much in the position as he. Xander had made the perfect choice. I nod slowly.
“Do it. Then find a gamma that we can put into position when I get back” I said quietly “In the meantime, Malcolm is the only person
