Chapter 74
Xander POV

All attempts to speak to my father have been denied. My frustra on is growing by the minute, even as I attempt to keep things running smoothly in the pack, while Heather and Isabelle continue to interfere in our business. Malcolm is at godsend, doing everything as instructed. He’s not a spy, I’ve cormed that myself, and now I have one more ally which is desperately needed while Xavier and Regan are gone. So far Isabelle and Heather are too self–involved to notice their disappearance but it’s only a matter of time. By now though, Regan and Xavier should have put a fair distance between the pack and themselves, so it’s not a huge problem so long as those bitches don’t discover where they are going
“She’s changed the schedule of the patrol” Malcolm’s voice interupts me and I look up from the desk, feeling worn and tired as he slams a piece of paper onto the desk.
Xavier’s only been gone for less than a day and already. I miss him and Regan. I hate being separated from my mate and my brother like this. It feels wrong and unnatural.
Without speaking I grab the paper and begin to peruse it, my eyes widening in shock. “She’s not only changed it but she’s also decreased the mumber of men patrolling the border,” I said with disgust.
Heather was going beyond her responsibilities or what authority she had. It was infuriating and the fact my father remained hidden in his room was also pissing me off. The thought of killing Heather and her daughter had crossed my mind several times today, only to be dismissed. The last thing we needed was the elders to come back and accuse us of murder, no matter how justified it felt to us.
“I thought the same thing.” Malcolm said, narrowing his eyes and folding his arms across his chest “What do we do? If we argue, she insists she’s responsible for the payment to the warriors and that it’s not in the budget” he mocked.
“I’d like to see that piece of paper she claims gives her the power and responsibility of the finances again” I muttered “although from the looks of it the first time it wasn’t forged. I know father’s signature by heart.”
I didn’t care to admit that I had forged his signature a fair few times myself in school in order to get away with various things. Now was not the time.
“She’s leaving the pack vulnerable” Malcolm pointed out steadily and with a slight amount of irritation in his voice. Xavier had been right. Malcolm was the perfect choice as Beta. He was proving to be invaluable already, despite how short a time he had been in the role. I was already comfortable trusting him and that spoke a lot about his character.
I exhaled. “It looks as though I’m going to be patrolling the perimeters for the next few days until Xavier and Regan are back,” I said grimly.
As Alpha it was my responsibility to ensure the safety of the pack I couldn’t allow it to be attacked because of Heather’s stupidity.
“You can’t spend every hour stalking along the boundaries. You tire yourself out” Malcolm argued. Take shifts with me. We can work together. I know some friends who would be willing to do the same. They might not be as experienced in the way of fighting but they can at least sound an alarm if they see rogues heading into the territory” he said lowly.
Inodded. “Do it.”
It was one option and could prove to be helpful.
“Hello boys” our heads turned as we saw Isabelle in the doorway, the door having creaked open only seconds after I finished the previous sentence.
We glared at her. She smirked. I noticed she was no longer in a wheelchair, pretending to be weak or hurt. Now that the elders were gone she had no intentions of continuing her pathetic act.

Chapter 74
“You look well Isabelle” I curled my lip. “As if you’ve recovered” added with a bite to my tone.
She laughed. “Well, I can’t stay feeling depressed and down forever.”

I look at what she’s wearing. A tight–fitting dress that spreads across her bodice, exposing her cleavage. It clings to her body, a long shit along one leg, showing almost to her groin. Her hair is styled into soft waves, and her makeup is designed to look seductive. I glance at Malcolm and nod for him to leave, wondering what Isabelle is about to try this time. I have a feeling she’s dressed like this for a reason, and I want to see what she’s about to try this time. Malcolm reluctantly leaves, shooting a backward glance over his shoulder. I signal that I’ll be fine. It’s not as though Isabelle is that much of a threat. She’s practically harmless except for her continued conniving and scheming
Isabelle leans over the desk, showing her breasts to me as I shift in the chair and raise my eyes, looking her deliberately in the face. She smiles widely at me.
“Xander” she purrs “I’ve missed you so much. Don’t you think we could put all this silliness behind us and start over? After all,” she paused as I stared at her stony–faced “it was not that long ago that you were determined to make me your chosen mate” she pointed out.
“That was before we found out what you were really like” I growled, “Now you disgust me and I have eyes for no one but my mate 1 added pointedly.
She was wasting her time if she thought she was going to be able to seduce a marked and mated man. She pouted “You used to tell me I was beautiful,” She murmured, “You used to enjoy touching me.”
“Not anymore” I hissed “Regan is the only one for me.”
I would never look or consider anybody else again. Isabelle should know that, that was the power and the strength of the
mate bond.
“Regan is nothing” her tone is sharp “I should be the one who is standing by your side as you attend the important events and meet other Alphas. You’ve lost sight of what’s important,” she said, twirling a piece of hair in her fingers.
“I know what’s important and that’s my mate,” I said with a snap Stop wasting my time Isabelle” I added glowering.
“Oh honey,” she said, shaking her head. “What is Regan going to think when she finds out that I’m pregnant with your child?” she asked me and for a moment all I could do was stare at her in disbelief.
There was no way she could be pregnant. I had never touched her. Not in that way. Xavier and I had insisted on waiting until she was marked. I stared at her, wondering what delusional world she was living in.
“I never touched you
in that way. You’re full of it” I snarled, certain she was lying to
me again.
She touched her stomach. “Can’t you hear the second heartbeat Kander?” she said widening her eyes and looking innocently
at me
