“Ralph is practically engaged to Daniella.” Helen prattled on. “He was her lucky charm. She’d perk right up around him. Kinda odd she wasn’t at his birthday party, don’t you think?”

The guests around them stayed mum.

Everyone knew Helen’s son had been pathetically obsessed with Daniella, always hovering around her like a puppy.

Too bad he was homely. Daniella grew up with Ralph, and Gabriel’s boys were good–looking. Why would she settle for him?

When no one bit, Helen plowed ahead. “Maybe now that Abigail’s back with Sebastian, you’re brushing off your foster daughter?”

It made sense. Daniella getting called out was a disgrace. Meanwhile, Abigail had scored a big role at Halden Group and landed Sebastian.

Even with her past, she’d made a name for herself.

The Gibson family must be tripping over themselves to cozy up to her now that Daniella was useless.

Will you shut up?” Sebastian slammed his lighter on the table.

Helen went mute, spooked by his frosty glare.

Abigail lounged in her chair, coolly pulling out her phone to play a game.

“You’re so dead–set on defending Daniella,” Sebastian said with a chilly smile. “Maybe you’ve slung enough mud yourself? Her getting called out must hit a little too close to home.”

Helen tried to protest, but the socialite beside her yanked her arm.

The socialite thought, ‘Has she lost her mind, picking a fight with Sebastian’s girl?‘

Sebastian eyed her coldly, a flicker of menace in his gaze. “Mrs. Yanis, is it? You’ll pay a steep price for tonight’s words.”

Ralph started to intervene for his guest, but Adam pulled him back.

“Abigail already hated how you always took Daniella’s side. Since when is this your fight?” he hissed.

“But she’s here for my birthday.” Ralph furrowed his brow.

Adam’s voice was deadpan. [So? With Abigail and Sebastian here, everyone needs to zip it. Mrs. Yanis asked for it by provoking the wrong guy. If you jump in, you want our family caught in the crossfire?”

“Is he really that badass?” Ralph sounded skeptical.

“He controls cutting–edge tech. Every industry runs on that stuff. He can tank a business before breakfast. Stay out of it.” Adam shoved him back

into his chair.

Ralph sank into silence.

“Mrs. Yanis was gunning for Abigail. If you play peacemaker now, you’re practically picking a fight with Abigail. I’m telling you, she ditched you because of this. You always think in angles, but she needs someone who’ll drop everything to have her back,” Adam sighed, looking thoroughly

done.

At this rate, Abigail would never choose Ralph.

The Gibson family had tossed her aside for years. Even Wyatt, the only one who tried to help, failed, leaving her to serve time for a crime she didn’t

commit.

Now there was someone who’d burn the world to protect her. Why on earth would she pick Ralph, the guy who stood by while she went to prison?

After Sebastian delivered his threat, he turned to watch Abigail play her game.

When she grew tired, he took the phone from her.

The volume was turned down, but everyone could still hear the childish sounds filtering out.

“You’re already on level 8,000? Have you been gaming a lot lately?” Sebastian asked, tapping the screen for her.
