After a while, Odie still hadn't heard any noise from downstairs.
Finally, he asked, "Haven't Sophie and Colby come in yet?"
"They should have," came the reply.
"Then why hasn't anyone come to greet me?"
"Boss, aren't you... not going to welcome them?"
Jonah had been struggling to figure out what was going on in Odie's mind lately. Odie had been a walking contradiction these past few days. He talked a big game about not wanting to go, but he still ended up attending Sophie and Colby's wedding.
This time, he had no plans to hurt Colby, yet insisted on saying it was all intentional.
Even inviting them to stay and recover was done reluctantly.
"Why should I care? If they want to stay, they stay; if not, they can leave."
Odie stood up, his voice icy. "I'm hungry. Get someone to make dinner."
"...Yes, sir."
As Odie descended the stairs, he noticed Sophie was nowhere to be seen in the living room.
Polly was still cleaning. Odie glanced her way and asked, "Have Sophie and Colby gone back to their room?"
"...Yes, but they've gone back to the same room."
Hearing that Sophie and Colby were sharing a room made Odie furrow his brow. "Didn't I ask you to prepare two guest rooms? How did they end up together?"
"Ms. Sophie said that she and Mr. Colby are married, so it’s only natural for them to stay together."
"Alright, no need to explain further. Call them down for dinner."
The maid was taken aback by Sophie's question.
Short on cash?
"I remember last time, abalone and sea cucumber were served like they were free. How come now... there's no ginseng in the chicken soup, no abalone in the braised pork, and no sea cucumber in the millet porridge?"
The maid, feeling quite embarrassed, explained, "Well... the boss said Mr. Colby is injured and shouldn't eat seafood and such that might worsen his condition."
"Is that so?"
Sophie frowned, scooped a spoonful of millet porridge, and reluctantly brought it to Colby's lips. "Hang in there, my love. Odie is being stingy. Just make do for now. Once we're back in Devonport, I'll make sure to take good care of you."
"Okay," Colby replied, looking at Sophie with doting eyes.
The maid standing by suddenly felt like she was intruding.
