After all, Eric was my husband, and even though Brown Group didn't win the bid, it was still something to celebrate.

Unfortunately, Eric had to go on a business trip that evening, so he couldn't come home with me. After comforting my parents and easing their disappointment over a phone call, I got into Dad's car after work and headed back to the Brown residence.

As soon as I arrived, I saw Jack standing at the top of the stairs, his face filled with disdain. Elsa was timidly standing behind him.

As we sat down at the dinner table, Jack immediately took a jab at me. "I heard that Flint Group's victory was partly thanks to your help."

I raised an eyebrow at him. "Where did you hear that from?"

Jack snorted. "You don't need to know where I heard it from, but don't you think you should consider whose side you're really on? Even though you're married to Eric now, aren't you still a member of the Brown family? Why are you turning your back on us?"

I pretended to be surprised. "Why am I suddenly a Brown family member again? Didn't you say before that once a daughter is married, she's no longer part of her family? Do you only consider me part of the family when I'm useful but want to kick me out when I'm not?"

Jack's face flashed with a hint of embarrassment, but he still pressed on, criticizing me, "No matter what, you should always put the Brown family's interests first."

He then turned to look at Dad and Mom. "Mom, Dad, tell her. Jane clearly knew how to secure the bid but helped Eric steal it from us. Isn't she betraying the family?"

Dad's face flashed with anger. He said in a low voice, "This is a family discussion, not a business negotiation! Your sister is already married to Eric. So what if she helps him win a project? You're over here criticizing your sister. How about you use your ability to win some projects for Brown Group?"
