Right after Hansel left, Kathleen got to a corner and called Arden.
The phone rang for a while but no one answered, which fueled her anxiety.
She suspected that Arden had betrayed her, hence neglecting her calls. The look on her face turned sour at the thought of it.
‘Arden… You betrayed me because of Lyla!’
All of a sudden, Kathleen found the thought amusing. Maybe because she had gotten used to being betrayed and had somehow grown immune to it.
She stood there like a madwoman, giggling maniacally.
……
Arden found it strange. He had been buying out M.K.’s shares but Mark did not do anything, not even a word.
Mark was a cautious man, he should not have let this happen.
Arden pondered about it over and over again yet failed to reach an answer.
However, he was looking at a chance to defeat Mark for good and he would never give it away.
“Boss, M.K.’s shares look strange to me.”
“What’s strange?”
“I can’t tell exactly but after something that big happens, M.K.’s shares remain at a normal level. It’s unusual.”
Arden squinted his eyes. It was what he worried about.
“Are we still buying in?”
Arden tightened his lips for quite a while before he said, “Buy!”
No matter what, he would never let this chance slip! He had been waiting for this day for a long time.
“But…”
Before the assistant could speak further, Arden interrupted him.
“Buy!! Buy-in at all costs!”
Since Arden was determined to get the shares, the assistant dared not say anything. He nodded and carried out the order.
On the other hand, no matter what Arden did, Mark replied with silence and calm.
No one knew what his plan was, so everyone in the company was in fear.
Justin, his father, was infuriated after learning what Mark did, or rather nothing. The man stormed the company just to see his son.
Mark was talking to J when the door was pushed open.
Justin and Mark’s secretary were outside and the secretary looked scared and sour.
Mark said to J, “Do as I said and… Give me a moment with my father.”
J nodded and left with the scared secretary.
When the door was closed, Mark looked at Justin. “What’s the matter, Father?”
Justin walked closer. “What are you trying to do?”
Mark reacted nonchalantly at his father’s furious look. “Father, I don’t understand what you mean.”
“You don’t understand? Do you have any idea what M.K. has become? What are you trying to do with the company?”
“Father, since the company is already in my hands, I hope you can put a little trust in me.”
“Trust? I trusted you too much and look at what M.K. has become?!” Justin bellowed.
However, no matter how angry or how loud Justin shouted, Mark reacted nonchalantly.
The more nonchalant he was, the angrier Justin was. The man squinted his eyes at his son and said, “Are you doing this on purpose?”
Purpose? Mark looked at his father.
“Is it because of Logan that you are trying to make the company pay?” Justin said.
Mark found it amusing.
“If so, why don’t I empty the company funds? Isn’t it a little faster?” Mark asked.
Justin frowned. What Mark said was the truth. “Then what are you doing?”
“It’s not me, it’s someone else. Someone is trying to do something to the company.”
Justin’s brows furrowed harder. “What do you mean?”
He then remembered what happened before this. “Is it that woman? Lyla Lowe? Is she doing this?”
“Hmph! I told you before she’s not a good woman!”
Mark could not tolerate or allow anyone to talk bad about Lyla. He glared at his father and said, “She has nothing to do with this. She was taken away because of me.”
Justin frowned again.
“Father, I know you don’t like her and I don’t expect you to accept her. I know her well and that’s all that matters.”
Justin was at a loss for words after hearing what Mark said.
It was not that Justin did not trust Lyla but because she was a righteous person, he hated her.
After what happened, Justin had already started to look at Lyla differently. However, he was angry when he stormed in and he did not choose his words wisely, hence the embarrassing words.
On second thought, it calmed him down a little.
“So what is happening?” Justin asked.
“I don’t think you should know about this. I promise you I’ll deal with it.”
Since Mark gave his word, Justin had no reasons to argue anymore. As long as Mark did not maliciously empty the company funds, Justin could sleep well at night.
He believed in his son’s method.
After he calmed down, Justin sat on the couch. He thought for a long while to arrange his words before he said, “If she’s taken away, what about the children?”
“What children?” Mark failed to react to the question.
“The children! The twins!” Justin asked.
Mark finally reacted properly and he looked at his father strangely. It was rare for the old man to ask about the children and show concern for their well-being. Mark even suspected that he heard it wrongly.
“They are fine,” Mark said.
“They know about this?”
“Gretel is out of the city but Hansel knows.”
“They are not worried?”
“Not at all.”
Justin was speechless for a moment. “They have any idea how serious this is?”
“They do actually.”
“But…”
“But! They are not worried.”
“How is she okay in there?”
“I mean she can’t come out even if she’s not okay, so why don’t you think of something and bring my mommy out?” Hansel asked with a giggle.
“Hmph! Tell your daddy to worry about your mommy! It’s none of my business!”
“Okay. I know you are not that kind.”
“You little--”
“Calm down. I’m just fooling around with you. If you don’t like it, you can just ignore what I said.”
“Hmph!”
Hansel shook his head at Justin. “Go visit my mommy then. I still have some matters to attend to. Bye.”
Justin got anxious when Hansel wanted to walk away. “Wait!”
“Is there anything else?”
“Where are you going?”
“Attend some matters?”
“What kind of matters?”
“I… don’t think I need to tell you,” Hansel said.
“You little rascal! Do you know how to respect your elders?!”
“Am I not little enough to you? Moreover, have you ever shown your love for me before?”
“I…”
“What are you trying to say? Speak up! Just tell me what your rusty mind is thinking!”
“Have you had lunch? Why don’t I buy you lunch and we can talk.”
Lunch?
Hansel looked at his watch and said, “Are you sure? Like right now?”
“What’s wrong? Too busy?”
“The timing is a little…”
“If you are hungry, just eat! There’s no need to care about the timing!”
“Okay okay! Of course I’ll go!”
What else could Hansel say? If he rejected the offer, the old man might do something to surprise him.
Piers said behind Hansel, “Is everyone in the Pattison family so strange?”
Hansel rolled his eyes white. “This is what we call one-of-a-kind!”
He then got into Justin’s car.
Piers also tagged along and sat down beside Justin in the car. He wanted to be invisible but Justin looked at him with an unsettling look.
Hansel noticed the unsettling look on the old man’s face. He said, “He’s my bodyguard but you can treat him like he’s invisible. You don’t have to be mindful of him, just say whatever you want to say.”
Justin assumed that Mark must have assigned a bodyguard to the boy, he did not ponder about it and nodded.
The car was driven casually on the road.
Justin was staring at Hansel and for whatever reason, he wanted to have as much time looking at the boy as possible.
Hansel sensed the gaze and returned his own. He touched his handsome little face and asked, “Is there something on my face?”
