Gretel gazed at the unfamiliar sight before her. She was rather frail that even opening her eyes was a grueling task.
“Mommy, Hansel.” Gretel weakly cried.
Lola was surprised. It never crossed her mind that Gretel would regain consciousness.
Many people with the same well-being would begin to have a fever and be on their last leg after injecting that stuff. Who knew she could still come to?
It was out of Lola’s expectations.
“Check her.” With Lola barking the orders, Black Eagle went to summon the people. It did not take long before several foreign doctors entered the room and began an examination on Gretel.
The doctors had completed the check-up a few minutes later.
“How is she?”
“There’s no signs of rejection.”
Lola’s mind was at ease to hear that.
“Okay.”
Lola took a glance at the silhouette in bed. Gretel was also looking back at them with a frown. “Who are you?”
Lola grinned. “For you to wake up now, it seems you have quite the willpower.”
“Who-who are you?”
“You will soon know about me.”
“I want to find my mommy.” Gretel tried to get up, realizing there and then that she had no ounce of strength left in her body. She could not move at all.
“Quit moving around, it’s not like I can get out of here.”
With her eyes on them, Gretel was thrown into a fluster yet still weak in her muscles. “Who are you and what are you trying to do?”
“Does it make a difference asking these questions?”
“You...”
Gretel wanted to get her limbs working but was unable to move an inch.
Lola’s eyes were without mercy. She uttered, “Young girl, don’t blame me. If you really want to pinpoint a fault, you should blame your mommy who gave you such a great anatomy. You even have willpower stronger than an adult.”
Gretel had no clue what she was talking about or what she meant but it did not stop her from sensing danger.
“You...” She was about to say something when she falteringly passed out.
Lola watched on before commenting, “Soon, you will feel no pain.” She then turned to the doctors. “How many more days?”
“Two days.”
“Okay, notify me immediately after.”
“Sure.”
……
Hansel, Mark, and Lyla were waiting for Lingo in a room the moment of her return.
With her making entry, they got on their feet in unison. “What was it? Any luck?” Hansel enquired.
“Wait.” Lingo removed the gloves in her hands and tossed them in a trash can.
Hansel furrowed his brows. He had a hunch even if Lingo held her tongue. Feeling guilty, he asked, “Are you okay?”
Lingo shook her head. “I’m fine. Those tricks of hers are no big deal.”
“It’s great that you’re alright,” Lyla spoke. “Did you manage to get anything?”
Speaking of this, Lingo frowned. “They seemed to be on high alert and bulked up the security. I couldn’t get in and was discovered in the end.”
“And?”
“Lola came out afterward, looking rather nervous. She kept asking me what business I had there. I hinted to her that my target was Felix but she was not quite convinced.”
“If that’s the case, we can’t be sure that Gretel’s with them,” Lyla gave her two cents.
“No,” Hansel blurted. “I have a strong feeling that Gretel is there.”
He lifted his eyes to meet Lyla and Mark’s. “Daddy, Mommy, please believe me. This is a telepathic feeling between me and Gretel. She is in there.”
Lyla had never once doubted Hansel’s words or thoughts.
She believed every word he said.
Hansel was never wrong with his judgment. Most importantly, Lyla’s mind was all over the place, eagerly hoping to find Gretel soon or hear news of her rescue.
She nodded.
“But we still don’t have any proof.”
“Daddy, Gretel, and I have always been connected telepathically. Please trust me on this.”
Putting a straight face, Mark turned to him and said, “I don’t have your telepathy but I believe that it has something to do with Lola.”
Hot with emotions, Hansel bobbed his head.
“There’s something fishy around with the stricter security. It wouldn’t be like this if there’s no secret.” Lingo offered her opinion.
“In that case, what do we do next? What are they up with if Gretel is held captive by them?” This was the query Lyla was most concerned about.
Lingo shook her head. “I’m not sure. Could it be that they know who Gretel is and kidnapped her to threaten Mark, or us in that matter?” Lingo made an assumption.
“I don’t think so.” Mark shook his head.
“Then?”
“It must be something we don’t know.” Mark could not describe it but his intuition was strong.
“Lola has a knack for poison. Would she...” Lingo paused midway and fixated her gaze on them. She did not have the nerve to continue the sentence because she was afraid the possibility may come true.
As expected, everyone fell silent subsequent to Lingo’s inference.
They were aware that the possibility was high.
This possibility was what they were most worried and afraid of.
“What should we do? How do we save Gretel?” Lyla probed.
She wanted nothing more than to barge in and demand Gretel.
“We need to figure out a way to deal with Lola. Taking her head-on will not save Gretel.”
“What are we supposed to do? We don’t have proof and we can’t get in. What else can we do?” Lyla asked.
“Yes.” Bobbing his head, Shadow carried out the orders.
“Felix, can my mommy be saved? I only have Mommy left with my sister gone,” Hansel pitifully retorted.
Felix turned back and gazed at him. He stroked his head. “Don’t worry, I won’t let anything happen to your mommy.”
Hansel nodded at last but still appeared rather worried.
Soon, Mauney was fetched over by Shadow.
He was Felix’s personal doctor. It could be said that Felix’s life was in his hands.
Felix shoved Mauney towards Lyla the moment of his arrival. “Quick, take a look. Check out what’s going on with her.”
Mauney was a foreign man. Giving a nod, he began an examination on Lyla.
While Felix stood at a side nervously, Mauney completed the check-up half an hour later.
“How is she?” All tensed, Felix probed.
“According to the examination, there’s nothing wrong with this young lady.”
Hansel’s heart thumped following the statement.
Felix frowned. “What do you mean?”
“Why is Mommy like this if there’s nothing wrong with her? She remains unconscious despite my best efforts to wake her,” Hansel remarked.
With his brows in a knot, Mauney fell into deep thought. “If so, there’s a possibility that Ms. Lowe is poisoned.”
“What poison?”
“I’d need to run some tests on her blood work to find out,” Mauney replied.
“What are you waiting for? Please save my mommy!” Hansel exclaimed as he grabbed Mauney’s hands. He could really be an actor with those acting skills.
“Don’t worry, I will do my best.”
Looking sullen, Felix seemed to be lost in his thoughts.
“How long will the diagnosis take?”
“It would depend on the situation. I can only treat illnesses. It would be better to seek an expert regarding poisoning.”
Expert?
Mauney’s words stirred a rush of emotions in Hansel.
He needed someone to bring this up. Felix might suspect him if it came from his mouth but it was a different story if it was coming from Mauney. It was a brilliant piece of work on Mauney’s part.
As it turned out, Felix made a scowling look.
Hansel did not have an inkling if he was able to connect the dots but anyone would under normal circumstances.
Felix then turned to Hansel. “Hear me out. Transfer your mommy to my place. I will figure out a way to save her,” Felix asserted.
Hansel incessantly nodded. “Okay.”
Thus, Shadow made arrangements for Lyla’s transfer.
With an arrangement in place, Felix got into a car and met Shadow’s eyes. “Have Lola see me.”
