Black Eagle was without a word as he fixed his gaze on Mark. He knew that taking Mark head-on was not the way to go.
Just as he dwelled in thought on the next steps to take, a figure emerged.
“It appears that you have in your mind to make things difficult for our Eastern Union Alliance.” A figure came up from behind. Lola was wearing a black windbreaker, looking nothing like a doctor and more like a killer.
With Lola making an appearance, Mark coldly smirked. “You got it wrong. I’m not giving Eastern Union Alliance a hard time but finding fault with you.”
“You—” Lola focused on him. “Step aside, otherwise don’t blame me for what’s to come,” she said.
“It should be the other way round.” Mark pulled out a gun and aimed at her.
“Hand her over.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Lola retorted. She would rather die than admit to it.
It was apparent that Lola had no intention of giving her up.
In that case, Mark was not going to waste another breath.
Before Lola could react, Mark charged towards her at lightning speed and pointed the gun right to her head.
Lola was dumbstruck.
Sure, Mark was well known in the circle but she had never got a taste of his expertise. Today, she had the experience at last.
“How about it? Are you handing her over or what?” Mark gave her a look that he would end her in a split second.
“You will regret killing me,” Lola told Mark. The intent in her eyes was plain to see without being explicitly explained.
Mark’s eyes turned terrifyingly hazy. “If that’s the case, I’ll make you wish you’re dead.”
Lola’s face turned grim. She was far too familiar with the rules of this community.
To be wishing for death was the worst tragedy ever.
Mark was about to pull the trigger when someone spoke up from behind.
“Hold it right there.”
They turned their gaze over and saw Felix appearing from a corner. Dressed in black from head to toe, he was like a ghoul in the night, mysterious and bewitching.
With his sudden appearance unexpected, Mark was unable to figure out the reason behind his arrival for a moment.
Lola turned to Felix. For him to show up right there and then, Lola was in two minds whether to be happy or worried. “Boss.” Lola gazed at Felix, caught between emotions.
Felix merely swept a faint glance at her before fixating on Mark. “Mr. Pattinson, it’s not very nice of you to come here and kill my people,” Felix leisurely uttered.
“I wouldn’t want to kill her had she not crossed the line with me,” Mark answered.
“Cross the line? I’m intrigued to learn where the line is drawn,” Felix casually snapped back.
Mark narrowed his eyes that alighted with a chill. “Felix Smith, are you really stupid or playing dumb?”
The next second, Felix’s gun was aimed right at Mark. “I was kind enough to allow your people to do their things here. Mark Pattinson, I gave you an inch but you’re taking a mile.
“I knew something was not right but it never occurred to me that it’s all your doing.” It was undetermined whether the smile on Felix’s face was bitterness or something else.
Lyla was never poisoned.
He knew.
“Felix, no!”
Mark was about to say something when Hansel came running from behind.
“No!”
Felix stared at Hansel with eyes of disappointment. “This is between me and your daddy. I don’t want you involved.”
“There’s a reason behind this. Don’t you want to know?” Hansel looked back at him and asked.
Felix let out a pale and helpless grin. “His motive can not be more clear. Mark Pattinson, don’t blame me for this.” Cocking the gun, Felix was ready to make his move.
“Wait!” Hansel barged over and came in between them.
Felix frowned out of fright. “What are you doing? Are you out of your mind?”
“I’m not out of my mind. I’m clear of what I’m doing!” Hansel stood before Mark. His firm look left Felix clenching his fists.
“So you choose him?” Felix inquired, smiling rather colorless and helplessly.
“Felix, it’s not what you think it is.” Shaking his head, Hansel tried to explain.
Mark stood up and pulled Hansel behind him. “You can just come at me for whatever!”
“Wow, what an affectionate display of a father and son combo. Well, I’ll just help myself.” With that, Felix pulled the trigger.
The gunshot fired with a bang.
“No!”
At that very moment, Lyla’s voice was heard coming from the back. She bolted ahead to stand in front of Mark but at the same time, Mark turned over while holding Lyla in his arms to dodge to one corner. The both of them tumbled onto the ground.
With his eyes wide open, Felix was stunned by the scene. There were no words to describe what he was feeling at the moment.
It was like an invisible hand clutching tightly around his heart. There was no escaping.
“Lyla, how are you feeling? Are you okay?” Mark asked Lyla.
Holding onto one arm, Lyla shook her head. “I’m alright.”
“I...” Lola turned her gaze elsewhere, without the nerve to look him in the eye.
“I found her!” Someone shouted in the back. Recognizing Lingo’s voice, Hansel immediately darted to that side.
Lyla and Mark took a glance at Lola before rushing towards the same way without hesitation.
Gretel, on the other hand, was like sleeping beauty, quietly fast asleep. She was without cuts or bruises as she serenely laid her head to rest.
“Gretel.” Lyla hurried over. Her heart finally fell back into place with Gretel appearing within her vision. She brought Gretel into her arms, holding her tightly.
“Gretel.” Mark was watching at the side, crying out to her but Gretel was motionless.
“Gretel, Gretel...” Lyla called out her name but despite her best efforts, Gretel’s eyes remained shut without a peep.
“Why is this so?” Lyla lifted her head and stared at Mark. Her eyes were red.
Just then, Mark darted a look at Lola who was not far off. Wending his way there, he aimed the gun at Lola. “What’s going on?”
Lola stood there without saying a word. She refused to resign to her fate. It never occurred to her that this would happen when the experiment was just moments away from success.
Felix turned to her. “Speak!”
“I have nothing to say,” Lola answered.
Felix observed her intently. His profound eyes gradually turned red. “You have gone out the line.” Without hesitation, he struck her with a bang.
……
In a hospital.
Gretel lay in an isolation ward, inserted with multiple apparatuses.
Lyla stood outside, watching everything in there through a glass.
Just then, Mark walked over from the other side. Gazing at Lyla, he placed his hands on her shoulders.
With her tears falling down, Lyla wiped them away. “She’s only a child. Why must she go through this?”
“Perhaps God is testing us and Gretel.”
“But she’s so young...” Lyla turned back to glance at Mark. Her tears kept flowing down. “Would she suddenly... leave us?” Lyla choked with sobs.
“No.” Mark shook his head. “It’s just a test we have to overcome. Gretel will be fine. I won’t let anything happen to her,” Mark said.
Later, Lyla rested against him, letting the waterworks run.
Mark moved his gaze inside, observing the various apparatuses lodged all over Gretel’s tiny frame. Of course, he was heartbroken.
Only, he would make Gretel better no matter the cost!
