Mark stared at her with profound eyes seemingly trying to look through her.

“No, I can’t take your word for it. Since God has given me another chance to have you, I won’t ever let go,” Mark firmly replied.

Lyla averted her gaze. “I think I couldn’t have made it any clearer. Mr. Pattison, I will choose to end it my way if you insist on pestering me.”

“Your way? What way is that?”

Lyla looked at him with distant eyes. “I can appear and disappear.”

Mark pulled a long face at the statement.

The hands rested on her shoulders slowly descended.

“What did you say?” Mark uttered in a raspy voice.

“I only hope that we’ll be able to stay away from each other and live a peaceful life from here on out,” Lyla said while turning her face away.

Mark narrowed his eyes at her. “Is this really coming from you?”

Lyla nodded. “Yes.”

Clenching his fists, Mark gave a nod. “Fine, fine.” He headed to the door, seemingly having taken quite a blow.

Once at the door, Mark, struck by a thought, turned back to glance at Lyla. “Are you doing this because of that man?”

Man?

Lyla frowned. “It’s between us and unrelated with anyone else.”

It was better as long as it was not because of him.

Although overwhelmed with a sense of loss, he still heaved a sigh of relief within.

He opened the door and took off.

Lyla did not have the guts to look, afraid that she would be unable to hold out and proceed to hug him from behind to tell him how much she longed for him.

She only dared to cast a glance once the door was shut. The tears welled up in her eyes had already gushed down...

Alas, such was fate despite their love for each other.

…...

Outside the door.

Amanda and Kyle stood there. Seeing that Mark was out, Amanda cautiously phrased her words. “Mr. Pattinson, are you alright?”

Mark lifted his gaze and took a look at them. Without a word, he motioned to leave.

Just then, Kyle spoke, “Don’t come back and disturb her again.”

Halting his footsteps, Mark turned back and shot him a look. “Mind your own business.” He then departed.

Amanda gazed at Kyle, wanting to speak her mind but held on to the thought. It was best she stayed out of anything in regards to relationships.

“Let’s go,” Kyle said as he pushed open the door to enter the house.

Lyla sat on the sofa in a trance. Amanda and Kyle entered the room and approached her. “Lyla.”

Snapping out of her thoughts, Lyla absent-mindedly wiped the tears off her face before smiling at them. “I’m okay.”

With that, Amanda and Kyle found themselves at a loss for words.

“Alright now, it’s getting late. You should get some rest. I’m going to bed.” Lyla made a beeline towards her room.

Kyle observed for a moment and wanted to go up and say a word or two but was stopped by Amanda. “Let her have some time to herself.”

Furrowing his brows, Kyle looked worried but said nothing in the end and let the matter be. However, concern was written between his brows.

His worst fear was Lyla coming around and accepting that man...

…...

Mark started drinking again.

It was one glass after another.

Neil was stunned to hear that Lyla was still alive.

“Are you sure you didn’t get it wrong?” Neil asked.

Mark rolled his eyes at him. “Let me ask you. Would you have mistaken your loved one?”

Color washed off Neil’s face at the question. He picked up his alcohol for a drink but simply could not resist mumbling to himself. “Although many years have passed, I would definitely recognize her if I see her.” He downed the drink in a gulp.

Seeing that his remark had hit home with Neil, Mark’s eyes flickered with sorry. “We are the same. No matter how much time has passed, I’m still capable of recognizing her at a glance.”

Neil kept to himself.

There was a commotion outside.

Neil turned over and happened to catch sight of Hansel drawing close amid the admiring eyes of others.

At first, he thought his eyes were deceiving him but at a closer look... “Hansel?”

“Neil.”

“It’s really you?”

With a stern look on his face, Hansel nodded.

The boy then turned to Mark. “Daddy, where’s Mommy?”

Mark’s already-long face looked even more sour.

Faced with his silence, Hansel frowned. What was going on? What was the meaning of this?

Gretel sensed something amiss. This was not supposed to be Daddy’s reaction.

Neil turned to them and let them in on the entire ordeal.

At the end of the story, Hansel furrowed his brows. “Mommy’s not that kind of a person, unless...”

“Unless what?”

“Unless she’s in a predicament or has her reasons.”

Taking a glance at Mark, Gretel walked over. “Daddy, what’s on earth going on between you and that woman?”

“What woman?” Mark was puzzled for a moment.

“The one you’re about to be engaged to.”

“Lyla, come see who’s here.” Amanda shouted towards Lyla’s room.

Lyla happened to get up. Having heard the commotion, she walked out. “Who is it?”

However, she was completely dumbstruck the moment she came out of the room. In an instant, her eyes welled up.

Standing two meters away, Hansel and Gretel were brewing with emotions at the emergence of Lyla.

“Mommy!” The pair cried in unison.

“Hansel, Gretel…” Lyla uttered with a trembling voice.

With their eyes on Lyla, the twins approached and threw themselves onto her. “Mommy, we really missed you.”

Lyla embraced them in return. Unable to contain her emotions, her tears flowed from her eyes. “I missed you too.”

The mother and children clung onto each other, indulging in the moment of their reunion.

Watching from a corner, Amanda’s eyes were red.

This scene was touching.

Not feeling the moment, Kyle looked at Lyla before turning his gaze elsewhere.

“Oh, don’t be like that. You’re making me cry.” Amanda jumped in. “Have a seat and talk.”

Just then, Hansel released his hold of Lyla and looked into Lyla’s eyes. “Mommy, let’s sit and talk.”

Lyla bobbed her head.

With the trio taking a seat, Hansel and Gretel turned to Lyla. “Mommy, how are you? Are you alright?”

Lyla shook his head. “I’m okay.”

“Weren’t you shot?”

Speaking of this, Lyla smiled. “Shadow and I discussed it beforehand. I had a bullet-proof vest on, so it wasn’t a huge deal.”

“Shadow?”

Lyla gave a nod. “That’s right.”

“But... Why didn’t Shadow tell us?” Hansel enquired.

Lyla frowned at the mention. “He said that someone there will coordinate with me...”

“But there wasn’t anyone.”

Lyla furrowed her brows. Even though she was struck by a terrifying thought, she held her tongue.

Nevertheless, Hansel and Gretel were smart enough to make the assumption.

“Shadow wanted you dead?” Hansel gave his input.

Gretel gave Hansel a look. She guessed the same but dared not share her thoughts.

Lyla was of the same mind. She gave it some thought before uttering, “Maybe it all happened too suddenly. I guess it never crossed anyone’s mind this would happen.”

Unable to concur with her explanation, Hansel balled up his fists.

“Alright now. It’s all in the past. Regardless of the situation, the most important thing now is that we’re all okay.” Lyla informed them. She knew that Hansel was the kind person that believed in an eye for an eye. However, she did not want Hansel to court trouble with the people on Felix’s side.
