In Dallas, Grant returned home three days later. The apartment was dark.
He called my name, but there was no response.
He turned on the light; the apartment was unchanged. He remembered I was
out of town.
I hadn’t contacted him in days. I’d promised to tell him when I would come
back, but I didn’t.
He checked his phone, seeing our past messages. I’d sent numerous
messages to him–daily updates, complaints, and asking him if we could go out for a date. His replies were always simple- okay, got it, yeah. Sometimes, he
didn’t even reply. And I put up with that.
Then, he realized my
last message was from over two weeks
ago.
Rosie hasn’t talked to me in so long? He thought.
An unease settled over him. He texted me, for the first time.
“Everything fine? When are you
back?”
There was no reply. It was eleven o’clock at night. He sighed, assuming that I
was asleep.
Then he saw a note. Each word hit him like a hammer.
“Grant, we’re over. I’m getting married, but not with you.”
He reread it, hoping it was a joke. He wished he had an excuse to accuse me
