"Oh, look, Jasmine. Colin gave me this bracelet when I was at Lincoln University. I cherish it a lot since it was given by someone I love. I've never taken it off. I don't think I'll wear another bracelet no matter how pretty."

Jasmine tucked a lock of hair behind her ear and glanced at my bracelet. Then, she uttered gently, "I know, but you don't find a bracelet you like every day. As women, we should rely on ourselves. We can't ask our boyfriends to pay for everything.

"If you're not financially independent, you'll be extra vulnerable even when you're married."

I gritted my teeth, wishing so badly that I could sink my teeth into her. She was implying that I was poor and that I was leeching off Colin's wealth. I was infuriated. But I wasn't going to let my anger take the bait. I wasn't going to give her the satisfaction.

When she provoked me, I had to keep my cool. If I lost my cool, I would be giving her what she wanted. So no, I would not give her what she wanted. I'd make her frustrated instead.

I looked at the bracelet and pursed my lips. Wistfully, I said, "You're right, Jasmine." I took a photo of the bracelet and sent it to Colin. "Let me ask Colin if he can buy it for me."

It was just for show. I knew Colin was too busy to reply to my message instantly. To my surprise, Colin responded almost immediately. He left a ten-second-long voice message.

Jasmine heard the notification on my phone. She lifted her head and grimaced. It seemed like she was curious to hear what Colin said to me.

"You're not accepting her gift. You're done for if you accept a gift from someone else," Colin threatened.

Jasmine didn't expect me to mention her in front of Colin. Her lips parted, but no word could come out. Queenie smirked contentedly while Andrew stared contemptuously at Jasmine's awkwardness.

"I know, I know. It's just a joke. I can't possibly accept her gift. She was just being thoughtful, and I didn't want her to feel bad for being rejected again." I laughed coyly. My voice was so cloying that I couldn't stand it either.

"Pfft, she's not that weak. Don't worry about that. Just enjoy your day. Oh, it's getting late. Grab lunch now. I'm still busy, but I'll find the time to buy you the bracelet this afternoon. See you."
