Chapter 21
Henry noticed the worry clouding Calista’s expression and offered her a reassuring smile. “There“s vast–he’ll never find our location. And even if he does, what claim does he have over you? He’s married to someone else.” He squeezed her hand gently. “What are you afraid of? I’ll protect you.”
News of their marriage quickly spread across the base, drawing warm congratulations from their colleagues and the leadership. Everyone understood the isolation that came with their work–finding love in such a remote place was a rare and cherished gift.
The base assigned them a small house, and on moving day, their coworkers crowded in to celebrate. Their union had become a beacon of hope for the entire community.
Calista smiled as she glanced at their wedding photo framed on the wall. She had even given Henry her cherished good luck charm, which he now wore close to his heart.
Despite his stoic demeanor, Henry turned out to be incredibly tender. He pampered Calista, refusing to let her handle even the smallest chores. Their colleagues teased him about it, but he would just smile sheepishly and say, “It
took so much to win her over–I won’t let her suffer, not even a little.”
Soon, the entire base knew not only of Calista’s beauty and intelligence but also of her husband’s unwavering
devotion.
Their happiness almost made Calista forget Ken’s ominous words about finding her. She and Henry focused on building their life together, making plans to shop for supplies on the next holiday.
Meanwhile, Ken finally reached the rugged, desolate frontier of the base. As he stepped out of his car, harsh winds buffeted him, and the gritty sand stung his face.
“This is where Calista lives?” he muttered, his heart sinking. How could someone so delicate survive in such a harsh
environment?
Determined, Ken clenched his fists. He had to find her, beg her forgiveness, and bring her back home.
He managed to secure a room from a local contact, an older man named Mr. Carter. Holding up a photograph of Calista, Ken began asking around for help in his search.
Mr. Carter examined the photo with a knowing smile. “Looking for a lost love?” His tone grew serious. “If she’s at one of the satellite bases, you’re talking about ten years of isolation, minimum. You might want to reconsider.”
