Natalie sighed deeply, “Mom and Dad never wronged you. They treated you even better than Jason. The problem is your heart. Everything looks filthy to you.”

Wyatt was expressionless as the police took him away, still wearing the medal he had just won.

On the day Wyatt was sentenced, my parents and Natalie placed a bouquet of flowers on my grave.

Wyatt’s cellmates found out that he had killed the biological son of his adoptive family, and they despised him for it.

They tormented him in prison.

Every day, they made him play fetch like a dog.

They even joked, “A tennis champion is perfect for this game.”

My dad gently scooped up some soup and brought it to my mom’s lips. “Open up, honey.”

My mom, her eyes dull and vacant, responded mechanically to his voice.

He couldn’t accept that the son he had loved so much had killed his biological son.

She was in a daze every day, her mind shattered, and had to be admitted to the hospital.

My dad had lost all desire to work on cases. I had been killed by someone he arrested, leaving him haunted by guilt.

He sighed, pulling out a napkin to wipe the drool from my mom’s mouth. “We were wrong. When Jason came back, we shouldn’t have been so harsh. We should’ve paid more attention to him.”
