Cassius was in a foul mood, his thoughts a tangled mess. At the prompt, he spilled everything about the morning's events, adding, “I know Yolanda was wronged, but Margaret got her comeuppance too. This whole drama has blown up enough, hasn't it? And it's not like I was the one stirring trouble online. Why's she lashing out at me? I went to the hospital to check on the Miller family, for her sake. After escaping the hospital, I scoured the city for her, even bought her a gift. But then she just flirts with some other guy right in front of me! If she doesn't take a good, hard look at herself this time, I'm not letting it slide so easily!”
However, Remington wasn't really listening to Cassius's litany of complaints. In his mind, the notion that Jerome and Yolanda had anything real between them was ludicrous. Jerome's sights were clearly set on Lizetta; any flirtation with Yolanda was likely a show for Cassius's benefit. Considering Jerome and Yolanda barely knew each other, Jerome's behavior had to be at Lizetta's behest. No woman would push the man she loves into another's arms, not even as an act.
After letting Cassius vent, Remington glanced up, a smirk teasing the edge of his lips, much to Cassius's dismay.
“Remi, are you making fun of me?”
Remington's deep eyes sparkled with restrained amusement. “You’re overthinking it. I'm just in a good mood,” he replied, standing up to straighten his jacket before instructing Cedric, “Let’s prep for the meeting.”
As he strode out of the office, he noticed Cassius's gloomy expression and, in a gesture of what could only be described as humanitarian concern, clapped him on the back. “The investigation report is on the house.”
Her humble approach earned her a nod from Laura. “Take your time to settle in. If you really want to get started, maybe see if any of your colleagues need a hand with something.”
After Laura retreated to her office, Lizetta’s smile faded. It was clear Laura had no intention of assigning her any significant projects. As she approached her new workspace, her phone buzzed with messages from an unknown number.
A sense of foreboding washed over her. But she had blocked Remington's number the night before. Had the Dashiell Group gone under, forcing Remington into the phone card business?
