Lance felt a renewed ache for this younger brother he’d barely just met.

“I know things haven’t been easy for you,” he said, his voice unusually gentle, “but our family the Yates family – we’re not like the people ang is you. If you come home to Yates Manor, you’ll be surrounded by warmth.

“Everyoite will care about you. You can’t shut us out just because of what they did.”

Cameron listened quietly.

After a long pause, she said in an even tone, “Go get the patemity test first.”

“It’ll only take a few hours,” Lance told her. “And while you’re waiting, think about this- we’re not like them. We won’t disappoint you.”

He was patient, even persuasive.

It was hard to believe this was the same Lance Yates who was usually cold and ruthless, now soft–spoken like some kind of big brother one could lean on.

But Cameron’s expression didn’t change.

She’d lived with Martin and Heidi for years and still felt nothing for them.

How could she believe that just sharing a bloodline with the Yates family meant they would truly care for her?

She couldn’t afford to believe in something like that. Not anymore.

Lance realized he was getting nowhere. He sighed and finally left.

Cameron, still suffering from cramps, curled up on the couch. Before she knew it, she’d dozed off.

The doorbell woke her.

She dragged herself up to answer it.

Elijah stood outside, concern etched into every line of his face.

“Cameron, I went to look for you after work. They said you weren’t feeling well and came home early. Are you okay? Did you see a doctor? Did you take anything for it?”

His barrage of worry made Cameron smile faintly. “I’m fine. Really. But thank you.”

Elijah let out a breath. “Good. That’s all I needed to hear.”

On the cab ride over, he’d kept urging the driver to go faster. He couldn’t relax until he saw Cameron with his own eyes.

She stepped back. “Come in.”

He followed her into the apartment.

“Oh, by the way,” Elijah said with a grin, “I heard back from Viremont Medical. I’m in. Did you get yours yet?”

Cameron nodded. “Yeah, I got my offer from Stellanford a few days ago.”

Elijah froze. “Wait, what? Stellanford?”

“Yeah,” she said, hugging a pillow to her stomach. “That’s the school I applied to. Something wrong with that?”

The school had even called personally, offering him a full scholarship and to waive all fees. But none of that had mattered to him.

What mattered was being in the same school as Cameron.
