Cameron didn’t say a word.

Bradley looked over gently. “What’s really bothering you, Cameron?”

She hesitated, then said quietly, “They want to see me because I’m alive. That’s it. The excitement won’t last. Once they realize I’m not who they imagined me to be, I don’t know if they’ll still want me around.”

Bradley gave a soft laugh. “Come on, Cameron. You’re smart and capable. Of course they’ll want you around. They’ll be proud to have a son like you.”

“Really?”

She used to be the promising one–more so than Milena. Everyone had placed their hopes on her. And still, she never truly belonged.

Bradley seemed to read her thoughts. “The Yates family isn’t the same as the Wallace family.

“Cameron, you have to understand that being related by blood makes a huge difference. Everything you went through with the Wallace family was just because you weren’t their biological child. You can’t lump it all together.

“Blood ties can make things come easy; and without them, sometimes you get shut out for no reason.”

Cameron stayed silent.

Bradley knew he needed to give her time to think. He gave her shoulder a reassuring pat. “Take your time and think it through.”

Then, Bradley left alone, giving Cameron some space to think.

Cameron sat curled up on the couch with her arms around herself, her eyes locked on the untouched gift box on the table as she pondered her situation.

She had no idea how long she had been lost in thoughts, but she only snapped out of it when the doorbell rang.

She went to open the door, and a delivery guy was standing outside. Confused, she said, “I didn’t order any takeout.”

“It was ordered by Mr. Saunders,” he explained.

“Thanks.” Cameron nodded and took the food. She hadn’t even realized she’d skipped dinner, but Bradley had remembered.

At the dining table, she pulled out her phone, planning to transfer the money for dinner to Bradley. But her finger tapped into her call history instead, and without thinking, she dialed Lance.

“Cameron?” Lance sounded both surprised and thrilled to get a call from her out of the blue.

Cameron said, “Lance, let’s set up a time to meet up?”

“Meet up? Meet who?” Lance asked.

“Your family,” Cameron replied.

Lance was stunned that Cameron had actually agreed to meet his parents. The surprise came so suddenly that he could hardly believe what he heard.

Lance blurted out, “Okay, I’ll set it up. I’ll let Mom, Dad, and Gavin know right now. Cameron, when are you free?”

“Any time is good for me,” Cameron answered.

Lance sounded excited. “Great, just wait for me. I’ll check with Mom and Dad, and let you know as soon as we have a time.”

With that, he hung up and rushed off to discuss the matter with his parents.

Chapter 558

Meanwhile, Levi, Jacqueline, and Gavin were watching TV as they chatted away in the living room.

Jacqueline let out a sigh, a hint of regret in her voice. “I shouldn’t have just given Cam a crest brooch. It feels like I didn’t put enough thought into it. L need to figure out something more meaningful to give her.”

Levi glanced over and said casually, “Why don’t you give her a house too?”

She shot him a look. “You already gave her one, so how am I supposed to top that?”

He just said. “The more, the better.”

Gavin, watching his normally no–nonsense father being swayed so easily by Cameron, couldn’t help but find the whole situation absurd. He pressed his lips into a thin line but said nothing.

Just then, Lance came running into the room, breathless with excitement. “Dad, Mom, Gavin! Cameron agreed to meet you guys.”

Jacqueline jumped up from the sofa, practically shaking with excitement. “Really? Cam actually said yes? Come on, let’s go right now.”

“Mom, it’s late now,” Gavin said, the look on his face less than thrilled.

Levi reached over to stop her. “Hold on and let Logan finish.”

Lance continued, “Cameron called just now. He said he’s ready to meet the whole family, and we can pick the time. When are you all free?”

Jacqueline’s eyes filled with tears. “The sooner, the better.” She could finally see her son–not from afar, not in passing, but face to face. She could talk to him, hold his hand, and call him by name.

Levi said, “Then let’s do tomorrow at noon.”

Lance nodded. “Okay, I’ll call Cameron right now.”

Gavin gave a half–smile. “Looks like those gifts finally paid off.”

Hearing that, Lance frowned. “Gavin? What was that?”

Gavin looked unfazed. “Nothing.”

Lance definitely heard Gavin right, but with their parents there, he let it go.

Jacqueline nudged Logan. “Logan, hurry up and call Cam.”

Lance nodded. “Okay.”

He was about to leave with his phone when Levi called out, “Just make the call here.”

Jacqueline chimed in, “And put him on speaker.”

Lance was speechless, but he gave in because his parents were even more anxious than he’d expected. Finally, he dialed Cameron’s number and put it on speaker.

After two rings, Cameron’s calm and flat voice echoed through the living room. Her voice was a little low, but still pleasant to listen to. “Hello, Lance.” When Jacqueline heard Cameron’s voice, her eyes welled up with tears instantly. She clapped a hand over her mouth, trying not to make a sound. Levi gently pulled her into his arms, letting her lean against him without saying a word. He fixed his eyes on Lance’s phone, focusing on that tiny screen.

“It’s me,” Lance said. “Cameron, I just checked with the family. They’re free tomorrow. How about we meet at noon?”

Levi mouthed, “On the island.”

Lance nodded. “Cameron, how about I pick you up tomorrow and we go to the island to meet with the family? Does that work for you?”

Cameron said, “Lance, I only agreed to meet you all. I never said I’d go home with you.”

Hearing this, Jacqueline quickly waved her hand, signaling Lance to go with Cameron’s wishes.

Lance said, “Then you pick the place.”

Cameron suggested, “Let’s just meet at a restaurant and grab lunch together?”

Jacqueline nodded eagerly at Cameron’s suggestion.

“Alright,” Lance said. “Do you want to book the place, or should I?”

Cameron replied, “You do it.”

“Okay.” Lance agreed.

Cameron said, “That’s settled then.”

“See you tomorrow,” Lance said. As soon as Lance finished speaking, Cameron hung up.

Jacqueline was already in tears. She grabbed Lance’s hand tightly and urged, “Lance, hurry up and book a place, then send the address to Cam.”

“Got it.” Lance glanced at Gavin, then turned and headed out to make the arrangements.

Jacqueline was so excited she could barely sit still. “Should we just leave the island now? No, wait. I need to pick out something to wear. I can’t just meet Cam looking like this. Oh, and I need to get her a gift too.”

“Honey, calm down,” Levi said. “Whatever you want to do, let’s take it one step at a time. There’s no rush.”

Jacqueline shook her head, still buzzing with excitement. “You need to change too. We can’t show up in our old clothes. Let’s hurry and buy something

Levi said, “Alright, let’s go shopping.”

Gavin didn’t look thrilled. He stood up and said, “Mom, Dad, I’m heading back to my room.”

But Levi and Jacqueline were so excited about seeing Cameron the next day that they didn’t even notice anything amiss.

Gavin left the living room with a grim look, and as soon as he stepped outside, he spotted Lance waiting in the shadows.

The moment he came out, Lance immediately stepped forward. Clearly, Lance had been waiting for him.

“Go ahead.” Gavin sat down on the leather sofa, his handsome face still looking pretty grim.

“But when you told me Cameron refused to acknowledge us as his family, and that’s when I started to have a problem with him.”

Lance said, “Gavin, you have to understand Cameron. He’s had a rough time with the Wallace family all these years, so he’s got some trauma to work through.”

“And who hasn’t?” Gavin’s voice turned sharp. “You think it’s been easy for Mom and Dad? Especially Mom? Do you have any idea what she’s been through all these years?”

Lance fell silent.

Gavin continued, “So, according to you, Cameron’s too scared to acknowledge us because of what happened with the Wallace family? Is he really that fragile? Since when did the Yates family raise someone so weak?”
