Ralph pondered whether or not to use the key to open the door as he drew closer to it. ‘Will I trigger a bomb? Who knows, Heather might be planning to blow me up. Maybe there’s a ferocious dog inside, waiting to bite me to death. Or she has hidden a dead body inside so she could frame me as a murderer?’

Imagining all these horrible scenarios, he had a sudden urge to leave.

However, knowing he had nowhere else to go, he reasoned that he would be better off dead than struggling to stay alive. He gritted his teeth and opened the door.

To his surprise, it was quiet inside, and nothing happened. Groping in the dark, he turned on the light switch on the wall and saw that it was just an ordinary apartment.

The apartment was minimally furnished, without a TV, and only had some sofas, tables, and chairs. He went into the bedroom and saw only a simple bed.

He had never seen an apartment as empty as this. Besides sleeping, it served no other purpose as there was no kitchenware, refrigerator, washing machine, or other appliances.

Even so, the place was more than enough for him at the moment.

Shutting the door, he walked around the apartment twice and discovered that it was just an ordinary one-bedroom apartment with a toilet. ‘Well, at least I now have a shelter, and I don’t have to keep roaming outside.’

He felt sleepy as he began to relax. He took off his dirty jacket, washed his face in the toilet, and laid down on the bed, soon falling into a deep slumber.

In the dream, Alexander mocked him while other relatives made fun of him. Even his friends he used to hang out with had turned against him and badmouthed him. Ralph wanted to scream but could not because he was surrounded by thick mist. Just as he panicked and became sweaty, he suddenly saw his mother.

“You’re awake.” A gentle female voice startled him. He looked over his head and saw “Heather” sitting on the edge of the bed, gazing quietly at him.

“Are you all right? Did you have a nightmare?” She reached out her hand as if to touch his face.

Shocked, Ralph backed off in reflex, not wanting her to touch him.

Seeing his reaction, “Heather’s” gaze twinkled with sympathy, and she put down her hand. “Don’t be afraid. I’m not going to hurt you. I just wanted to see if you’re okay.”

“I’m fine.” He shook his head and let out a sigh as he collected himself. He looked exhausted with his head propped on a hand. “I’m fine.”
