The tea room fell into a brief silence.

Nell was not close to the old master. They had not established a relationship in the short few hours of interaction.

Nevertheless, she was still saddened by the bad news.

“Second Uncle Garrett, my condolences.”

Joseph smiled.

“It’s okay. Everyone goes through life and death. The old master has been sickly and hasn't been able to live the best of his life. I shouldn’t say this as his son but it’s okay to pass on at this age.

“Because of her child, Juli hadn’t been in the right state of mind and still couldn’t let it go even after adopting Stephanie. We lost her to depression when she was only in her thirties.

“This has always been on the old master’s mind. He’s been busy with family affairs over the years and never really searched for the child because he wasn’t sure if the child was dead or alive. Now that he was nearing his end, he didn’t want to leave with regret and sought ways to find her.

“The truth is, it’s not important whether the child is genuine or a fake. As long as the old master thinks she is, then she’s the child. Otherwise, all will be in vain.”

With that, the trio fell silent once again.

For a moment, Nell was at a loss of words.

She finally understood what Gideon meant when he said it was not necessarily a good thing with the child back.

Apart from the old master, no one in the family wished she was back!

After all, with the old master soon to breathe his last, it was unknown whether a will had been made. An additional child meant extra competition, even if the child was a helpless woman without connections and backing.

Joseph picked himself up to send them off. Once they were at the door, Joseph stared at Nell, unable to put together a sentence.

Reading his thoughts, Nell faintly responded, “Don’t worry, I won’t say anything and pretend I don’t know her as long as she stays away from me. For me, the past is in the past. Those who deserved it have been executed and I’ve already retrieved what’s mine. At the end of the day, she has exhausted every means possible and nothing good came out of it. I know better than to latch onto the matter and go after her. It’s a waste of my time and effort.”

Joseph’s mind was put to rest.

“If that’s the case, let me extend you my gratitude.”

Nodding, Nell turned and departed together with Gideon.

Back in Fengqiao Villa, it was still early.

The pair had not eaten much at the Garretts’ place. Now that they had returned, Aunt Joyce specially made Nell’s favorite glutinous rice balls and served them the dessert.

Nell and Gideon sat on the dining table. Nell ate the rice balls while her mind wandered elsewhere.

Taking a glance at her, Gideon asked, “If you don’t feel comfortable about it, I can take you there and expose her. Don’t lose sleep over it.”

Nell paused for a moment before snapping out of it. She explained, “Oh, no. I wasn’t thinking about her.”

Gideon raised a brow.

“What’s on your mind?”

Nell hesitated before replying, “I was thinking, I had always heard that Old Master Garrett was good to Stephanie but it doesn’t seem to be the case today. Do you think that because Celine’s back, Stephanie, as the foster daughter, isn’t as welcomed anymore?”

Gideon’s complexion darkened.
